Kolkata to Kerala - advice please.

Well the good news is i have my flight booked and i arrive at 22.00 in Kolkata on the 11th January. Now the thing is i want to get to Kerala as soon as possible after that and chill out there for a bit before starting to explore India properly. I will explore Kolkata when i leave so ideally want to book a train for the morning of the 12th. I reckon it is far too long to do in one go on my first day and as i am in no rush was thinking of splitting the journey into 3 sections so would have 2 overnight stays en route. So question 1 is where would you recommend that i break my journey? n.b this is my first trip to Asia or indeed anywhere in the developing world and am going solo so would probably prefer to stop somewhere not too hectic!! Of course if this is not an option then i will deal with it!

And question 2 can anyone recommend a good mid-price place to stay in Kolkata and would i be able to get any pre-paid train tickets delivered there? Also if i am getting a train the next morning should i stay near the train station?

You can break your journey in Madras (Chennai) and stay at the Broadlands Hotel in Triplicane, or some other hotel around there (Many people have mixed feelings about the Broadlands, myself included, but it is a good place to meet other travellers and sup a beer).
In Calcutta there are many hotels around Sudder St. and although I haven't been to India for a couple of years, I don't remember there being much to choose between them.
I'd be interested to know if you managed to get a cheap airline ticket in Glasgow (for future reference). PM me if you can give me some info on that.

calcutta to kerala would keep yu in train for some time dear.
Book an air ticket for around 5000 rs if yu bid early enough .Let us know some details , price range etc and we could make a suggestion .
