Online reservations: limited hours.

If you want to book train tickets in advance using the excellent online ticketing system at www.irctc.co.in, be aware that reservation is only functional between 8.00 and 22.00, and from 08.00 and 14.00 on Sundays (all times IST). You can view the availability of seats, though.

have just finished reading your excellent contribution.
haven't been to india jet and had quite a few questions about indian trains and the whole system and how it works.
now they are all answered!
because my english is not the best, it took me a few hours to read (and understand) the whole of it, but it was well worth the effort.

many, many thanks

by the way,
what is the beach you like the most?
would be pleased to hear your oppinion on the thread "the most beautiful beach of the world"

At times they think that passengers are to be delivered like a deep frozen parcel .Just shout at that AC operator sitting at the corner cabin near the toilet. Its too difficult to locate when closed. He hides inside

On my first trip to India, my friend and I travelled First Class air conditioned (1A) from Trivandrum to Chennai, my friend spent long periods in the loo (not air con) TO WARM UP.

The cold is relative. Obviously, when outside temperatures drop at night, one feels cooler inside the AC compartment and hence the need to ask the attendant to reduce the cooling.

During mid-noon, when the outside is like a furnace, one may complain that the AC is ineffective, if the attendant does not increase the cooling inside!

Good job!

I found all this information extremely useful. Took note of it for my trip to India (June-July).

THANK YOU!

Resourceful train travellers should carry a roll of plastic duct tape to mitigate the effects of air-conditioning.

Those of us lucky enough to travel around India in December and January can be quite comfortable in Second Class Sleeper (reserved).
