Khajuraho station is maybe the closest.

Train 2448 departs Agra Cant at 00.25 and gets to Khajuraho at 07.50, the train has 3-tier air con (Rs 526) and non-AC Sleeper Class (Rs 207).

This train departs Agra on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, but be careful with date when planning and booking, Mondays train departs on Sunday night if you see what I mean, but you'd book using Monday's date.

Option 2

In addition to what Steve has said, since 2448A runs only three days a week, you may want to know about alternate option(s).

The other station which is closest to Khajuraho is Satna (STA) which lies on the Mumbai Allahabad Main line. From Agra, you have daliy service to Satna with very very convenient timings.

2190 Nizammudin Jabalpur Mahakoshal Express departs Agra Cantt (AGC) at 19.28 hrs and arrives STA next morning at 6.30hrs. (2A - Rs. 930, 3A - Rs. 688, SL - Rs. 264).

From STA, you can take a jeep / bus to Khajuraho. While a jeep would take around 3 hours, the bus would complete the same journey in approx. 4.5 to 5 hours.

Once one gets off at the Khajuraho train station, how far is the main street where the hotels are? (budget hotels at the main entrance to the temple.) Can we just walk or one needs transportation?

Khajuraho train station is 7-10 km away from western group of temples, where most hotels are. So I think you should take an auto Don't know about bus availability

I was there in Khajuraho just over a month back...

Had combined the trip with Orchha...
There is a train which one can take from Orchha for Khajuraho...
The train comes in from Jhansi, but its best to board it from Orchha itself...
It leaves Orchha at around 7.30 a.m.
It might be tough getting a seat, but one can and will always be accommodated...
And then, there is always place on the Upper Tier...!

The Railway Station at Khajuraho is sparkling clean...
Quite a pleasant surprise...!

Transportation in the form of Autos / Taxis are available from the Railway Station to the main Town, which is a fair distance away...

Cheers...!

Yes !

The first one Delhi - Agra - Khajuraho is an express train.

The second one is a passenger train, slow & crowded.
