Hello all,

I would be grateful for some advice from anyone who has taken the train from Kathgodam to Delhi and has good local knowledge of local Delhi travel times.

I am considering taking either the 335pm from Kathgodam which arrives at New Delhi station at 905pm or the overnight train which arrives in Old Delhi at 4am and Delhi Cantonment at 513am.

My questions are as follows:

1. If I take the first option which arrives in New Dehi at 905pm, how much time would it take at that hour to go from the train station to the New Delhi airport? My final destination is Mumbai and am planning to stay overnight at a Hotel close to the airport so I can fly early next morning.

2. Is it safe at that hour in that area (I am not very familiar with Delhi)? I will be traveling with wife & 2 daughters. Is it easy to get a pre paid taxi?

3. If I take the overnight train I see that it arrives in Old Delhi at 4am, but at Delhi Cantonment at 513am. I am thinking of buying the ticket to Delhi Cantonment to get that extra hour of sleep and also because it looks closer to the airport. Good idea? Do you know what the train does for that 1hr 13mins between the time it arrives in Old Delhi and then at Delhi Cantonment? Are passengers allowed to sleep in until it gets to Delhi Cantonment or is everyone supposed to disembark at 4am at Old Delhi station? Is it easy to get taxis from Delhi Cantonment to go to the airport? How much time would it take at that hour? I am assuming there should not be much traffic?

Sorry to ask so many questions- comfort of wife & kids is paramount for me and they are not used to India, hence trying to choose the best option.

Thank you everyone.

What time is your flight to Mumbai?

Asking for checking if you could stay in the retiring room at NDLS and leave by the first metro to Delhi airport.

If you are not used to noise, the night train may be uncomfortable due to multiple sleep breaks. Best is to take the Shatabdi and book a place close to station, then take the morning cab to airport.

In my view, going towards airport will be of no use once you reach Delhi. You will reduce your resting time and the traffic will be heavy, so will take a lot more time then it will in the morning.
If you find my posts confrontationist, please bear, I am an old frustrated guy who has nothing better to do than sit on rocking chair and curse the world whole day

Great advice Jituyadav and snotty! It is a morning flight around 10am. Any suggestions for a decent hotel near NDLS? Yes do not want to drive all the way to the airport Hotels at 9pm. I see it would still take about 45-60 mins even at that hour. Thanks again folks. Its thanks to helpful people like you that makes this forum so great!

Could be a good idea provided you have a good nights sleep.

If you have booked the tickets till Delhi Cantonment then there is no need to get down at Old Delhi railway station. The train halts for 40 minutes at Old Delhi railway station. After that it travels at snail's place till it reaches Delhi Cantonment railway station.

The airport is around 12 kms from the railway station. You should be able to get a cab at that time of the hour.

Thank you very much Aarosh..
I ended up changing my itinerary and now will fly from Pantnagar to Delhi.
But I now regret doing this, because I heard later that these Air India flights are extremely unreliable and prone to cancellation.
Do you or anyone else know if this is indeed the case?

That is what I also have heard and maybe there would be some members who might have experienced it first hand.
