Dear fellow trvellers

Is the seating arrangement in Shivalik Deluxe 1x2? Does the view of the valley fall on the 2 seat side or on the single seat side? Any idea how the seat numbering goes? I have attached a pic here (from bcmtouring.com/forum/) for convinience.

Looking forward to some help!

Thanks a lot!

Smile Kalka - Simla Toy train - Shivalik Delux - Seating arrangement

@MODS - Can we please have the title of thread changed to something like this posts' title? Makes it more meaningful when one is looking the the index!

The seating arrangement can be better seen in this post: At Kalka, does the Motor Rail Car wait for the Howrah-Kalka Mail to arrive?

Please note that the back rest of all the seats are movable to either side except the first row which faces the end/beginning of the coach (last row is near the door & toilet). So you may turn it to seat as per your convenience. However, the last row passengers are not allowed to move it other way as the attendant will keep his stuff near that.

As is evident for the pic in the above linked post, one side is 1x1 (on the door side) and the other side is 2x2.

Both the sides have views showing up and one can move around to capture any passing moment!

The seats are numbered, but not all numbers are visible/legible. It mostly depends upon the attendant how he helps you to seat, though if you see your seat number you can definitely have a go .

I'll try to add a couple of pics showing the way you can swap the back rest and seat direction (don't have them handy now).
Did you wear the other person's shoe today?

As you can see all done as per your suggestion, Indracal.

I am also moving this to Indian Railways Forum where I think it will be more useful.

Dear Indracal,
Thank you so much for your detailed answer. Very helpful. I just got the tickets booked.
Your suggestiong to rename the thread was apt and the moderator's response so quick! Guess these are the things that help make this a great forum for travel enthusiasts!
Thanks again for your help.

To save someone wasting their time, I'm about 95% sure that 'C' is a 2S carriage, making C4 the 4th 2S carriage.

2S is bookable 2nd class seat, and not the carriage shown in the photo in post 1 and described in post 2.

Steven, what you said is not true for Shivalik Deluxe (train # 241 KLK-SML/242 SML-KLK). I have travelled thrice in this train and all the coaches are marked as C-'n' as Brajesh rightly said.

IR puts it in RAJDHANI category, probably because it comes with Luxury seats and food onboard. The only coach type available is CC (Air conditioned Chair Car), but the coaches are not AC - simply to allow tourists to get a feel of the weather when they are approaching the hills!

It is typically meant for tourists, and takes about 5 hours to cover the distance. At INR 280/-, I'd say it's value for money!

Brajesh - I had a rough sketch of the seat numbers, but can't find it now. Shivalik Dlx has single seats on one side and 2x2 on the other. Since 2 of you are travelling, so either of this should be fine. Check out the pics and links mentioned in the earlier posts and you'll get an idea!

Tip: if both the seats are marked as "WS" (Window Side), probably you're on the Single seats; If one is WS and the other is "SM", then on 2x2!

You can try that, but seats are based on your luck (though there are algorithms which decide the seats you get).

Being devil's advocate, what if both of you're given window seats but numbers are one row between them or across the passage?

I'd personally be fine, if one is WS and the other SM. Your seat nos (10 & 11) also indicates that you're seating next to each other. But it's finally your choice

Have a great journey!

FInally, I could find the pics and link it here - sorry for the unintentional delay, but better late than never:

SAME Seat with Backrest adjusted: Pic 1 & Pic 2 on Picasa

This helps one who has to seat in the direction of the train (for whatsoever reason, typically medical or psychological) - or for better viewing.

Toy Train is a commonly used name in India for any narrow gauge train. E.g. Kalka - Simla , Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The Shivalik Deluxe is a specific service on the Kalka - Simla. There are other trains such as the Himalayan Queen.

The Kalka Simla is scheduled to run all year round.

Hi Vandy, technically there is nothing called a toy train. All the trains in this SML-KLK route are using the same track (I'm confused if they are narrow or meter gauge, hence the above construct ).

If by "Toy train" you mean the train with everyday schedule for tourists, with multiple reserved compartments + Food - then this is the one. And it'll run in January as well.

<Edit - Cross-posted with Dave above>

P.S> Please check www.erail.in for trains between KLK (Kalka) & Simla (SML).
