Kalka-Shimla Train
Looking at the timimngs of Kalka-Shimla trains at Indianrail.giv.in site, I find that therer are 3 trains that depart Kalka early morning between 5 am and 6 am.
And there is another train at 12. noon. Now all of these timings are inconvenient to me as I have to first caught a bus to Kalka from Chandigarh and 12 am train is also not ideal since it would reach Shimla rather late. at Now my question-is this all?. Do there exist more trains (passengers hence unlisted on Indianrail site), particularly between 6 am and 12 am? Also a related question, on reaching Shimla by bus?. Do they still obliqge one to get down 2-3 kms before Shimla proper and oblige one either to take a bus (difficult one has some luggage) or a taxi at extortinate rates (Rs 100 for the same 2-3 kms). Any way to avoid this trouble? |

Hi there - dont know about the bus, but there are only a couple of trains to Shimla from Kalka (the ones you mentioned). Another option is to take a taxi from Chandigarh or Kalka all the way up to Shimla (if your budget can afford it) should be around 2,000 to 2,500 rps...

If you catch a Himachal Tourism Bus then they will drop you off at 1 of 2 places.
the first will be the vistory tunnel. This is a regular stop and most people will get off here. The second is the ISBT which is about 1 km up the road. I dont think every bus finds its way here. Traffic is abig problem in that area of Shimla and hence the reason why a lot of buses are not allowed to enter into that Zone. Incidentally, even if you were to take the toy train up you would get off, more or less, at the same place as victory tunnel , infact even before that so your apprehension on "taking a taxi" or having to get down early would still exist. If you can tell me where you are staying i coulod suggest a option.

I think there is only one train that starts after Himalayan Queen from Delhi arrives at Kalka that is around 12.

I did the Kalka Shimla journey in August 2006 having previously travelled there by car. It was well worth it and a very relaxing journey.
I would not hesitate in reccomending the train. I think we got the 05:30 train. The train stopped at Barog for a short time and they loaded the food. I think the ticket cost about 500RS. It was well worth the money and the inconvenience of having to get to Kalka the day before. |
