Jodhpur To Mumbai

Hi All,

My Rajasthan itinerary is ending in Jodhpur and I need to travel back to Mumbai on Nov 6. The flights out of Jodhpur are preety expensive ($175 USD) so can someone suggest a cheaper way to return to Mumbai. I am traveling with hubby and 2 eight year olds. Someone suggested a train ride may be fun for kids. Is there a train from Jodhpur to Mumbai? What would be the most comfortable arrangement on the train? This is the kids first trip to India and ours after 29 years so a bit nervous. My other thought was to go to Jaipur and take a flight from there.

I took an overnight express train from Mumbai to Jodhpur last summer - just a guess, but there might be a reverse trip

There are 8 year olds, and then there are 8 year olds, only you know if your children will be happy on a long train journey.

Train 2479 departs Jodhpur daily at 18:45 and gets to Bandra Terminus station (Mumbai) at 11:45 the next morning.

2-tier air con = Rs 1305
3-tier air con = Rs 925
Sleeper Class = Rs 348

Children travel at half adult fare.

The total cost for two adults and 2 children in 2-tier air con is US$ 84.1

There are train journeys, and there are Indian train journeys.

Hi Stink bean,

We have travelled by this train last december and it is good experiance. They have no pantry car and limited stops. So get your food packed in advance.

we had some snacks packed from the sweet shop outside the reservation center pizzas, sandwich etc. they lasted us for the night and then we brought some fresh food at surat / baroda for breakfast. You can always carry some fruit, biscuits and chips etc for the children

I suggest 2AC or 3 Ac for your travel and please request lower berths / window so that the children can view the chages in the scenery. this itself can keep them occupied.

We travelled to-fro mumbai -jodhpur by train and I found the view better while travelling to jodhpur simply because the train left from mumbai in the afternoon allowing us to enjoy daylight untill almost 7 pm and then the sunrise was at 5 am and we were in rajasthan.

Thank You Otwisted, Steven_ber and Mani! I think we will do the train journey. It sounds like it will be a god experience for us and we don't get a chance to do this sort of thing in the US. Also Bandra station will be perfect since we will be staying in Khar which is close to Bandra in Mumbai.

Steven_ber, Where did you get the train number? When I looked at the Indian Railway site, if I put in my actual date of travel (Nov 6), it tells me the advance reservation is not available. If I put a date in Oct, the trains that I see for travel on Monday are - 4707 0r 4847. Am I doing something wrong? Also how far in advance can I do the bookings?

You can book the train 60 days in advance.

I always find the trains, and then look for dates.

The train listed above is a temporary train that runs daily until December.
