Jan Shatabdi Mangalore-Madgaon and return Last winter I was researching info to travel the Konkan Railway and I'm sure that I remember a Jan Shatabdi train being listed on the Mangalore - Madgaon route. Having had to cancel my trip for domestic reasons and rescheduling for this winter, I cannot find mention of the train on any resource. Has this train been cancelled? Is it dry season only? Is it a figment of my imagination?

The Jan Shatabdi was cancelled because it wasn't popular, hardly surprising as the Verna/Madgaon-Mangalore passenger (with bookable 2nd class seats) runs the same route at the same time, just a bit slower. (do a search on the Indian Railway site for trains with 'second seating' to find the passenger train, it's number is KR-?) The Jan Shatabdi would be much more popular with tourists if it departed Madgaon in the morning, and departed Mangalore in the afternoon for it's return journey.

The Dadar - Madgaon Jan Shatabdi, same train used to be converted in to Madgaon - Mangalore Jan Shatabdi after reaching Madgaon & I think it was the same case while coming back. As Steven said it was not at all popular because of it's timing. Ronak.

Konkan Thanks for the info - my main interest in the train was because I was looking for the fastest and most comfortable way from Hospet to Mangalore. (there's only about 30 mins between the attival of the train from Hospet and the departure of the Mao-Maq passenger) I've just checked and have been surprised that there's a quota on the A/C express trains between Goa and Mangalore so I'll be able to sort something out. Once in Mangalore my intention is to travel north on the Konkan railway passenger trains stopping at places with interesting names.(I visited Dharmastala 20 years ago just because I liked the name and wasn't disappointed!) I'm looking forward to Steve's recommendation of Murudeshwar. Annoyingly there seems to be a small gap in the passenger services between KR2 and KR5 - a bit annoying for a completist like myself.

oh damn I was searching for the train too and I cannot find. I dont think it was cancelled because it was unpopular. The train was introduced in such a way that no one really knew that it was a mangalore to bombay train. I really dont know why they had to break it up. It was fast train and was much faster than the Verna/Madgaon-Mangalore which took 7+ hours to reach madgaon. Wheras the janshatabdi took less that 4 hours and 10 minutes as far as i remember That is real fast. There was a need for a faster train on this route and the track to supports it. But the railways dont seem to be doing a good job in publicizing it. Damn I miss this train. What suprises me is that the rajdhani that passes through takes 6 hours.
