Jammu to Amritsar.

Hi all,
I just wondered if any body has done this particular rail journey.
I just could n`t resist booking the chicago house boats for a week that i have read about on I.M. in Srinigar, (another concrete plan up the spout!) My question being, Is it a good journey for views from the train, well worth a day trip, or is there nothing much to see, and we would be better to have the kip over night!- 5 hours, thus saving an overnight stay.
Many thanks for any replies.

Which night-train did you have in mind ? All I can see is the 9226 JAT BTI Express which leaves JAMMU TAWI at 22:10, and arrives AMRITSAR JN at 03:05. Doesn't sound much fun to me, or a restful night. There is a day train, the 8102 MURI Express which leaves JAMMU TAWI at 14:05 and arrives AMRITSAR JN at 19:10. Personally, I like to arrive earlier than that, to secure a nice hotel room, which is why I made that trip by bus last year. Haven't got the exact times with me, but the trip was OK, nice to look out on all that wonderful Punjab farm-land.

If you get to the Golden Temple, DO spend a bit of time helping to make the 6000+ chaptis needed each day. The guys there are great fun, and welcome the help. See my Golden Temple page.

Hi Tim,
yes , there was another night train that i saw, admittedly that got in at 0420 if i recall, and wouldn`t be much of a kip, I can`t do buses due to back probs, but i appreciate then, that i could well be looking at farmland, from the train window, sounds o.k. to me.
I cirtainly intend eating at the temple, and just like at home, i guess i will be washing up afterwards!.
thanks for tips.

Also Tim,
I have the details of train number 8102,our flight from Srinigar gets into Jammu at 1125, and the train departs at 1335, So could be ideal timing.

Tim,
Those are great pics of the temple and the people.
One thing though, was it o.k. to drink the water with your temple meal, or did you drop a purification tablet in?

Martin - If you are not in such a hurry, how about a day in Jammu? There are some interesting things to see: the fascinating Raghunath temple, the Bahu Fort, and the intriguing Amar Mahal + museum: all worth a look. There's also a small market area on the hill, and the general location, alongside and overlooking the river, makes for some interesting walks. Stay 1 night, and catch the train on the next day.

The water at the Golden temple was OK as far as I was concerned, but you can always refuse if you feel happier doing so. No one will be offended.

Purification tabs: note that they generally take 1 hour to work.

Thanks Tim,
Your probably right, I did think about staying longer, actually have 6 days in hand before flight from Delhi to Kochi. Not enough time for Pathankot-Kangra-Dharamsala, Also thought about the temple shrine, something Devi near Jammu, but may be tough on my knees.
All help appreciated Tim, by the way Iv`e never used water tabs before, I wasn`t insinuating any body/their water was dirty.
if you see what i mean!
