| If you are a married couple, or two females singly travelling, this kind of thing seems to get the two berth assigned. In my experience, only a couple of times, has a single female and myself had it. I don't think you can specifically ask for it. Mod Note: Can we just focus on the 'security' aspect please - posts re love, relationships, who is decent, who is not, where OP comes from, etc. do very little to contribute to OP's question.

| Dear r shum2, ##The allotment of coupes (**2 Berths) AND cabins (**4 berths)is done when Charts are finalised, which is done, four hours before the scheduled departure of the train. ##While booking the berths in the PRS Counter, request for allotment of Coupe, however, will be noted in the System by the clerk, though the decision on such requests, will be taken at the time of finalisation of Charts ONLY. |

| I have the peculiar belief that it is safer in 2nd sleeper that first, more company and often salt of the earth. Academics, business people, administrators and their families, fond memories. Even once with some rowdies my spouse shouted them down and organized them into playing cards with her. Nobody should miss travel on the Indian rails and preferably second class.. |

| . . . . . What OP means by "Secure" is "Privacy". (OP and his fiance are both excited about experiencing privacy in a coupe when the train is running fast.) OP would like to know how to get a coupe or cabin. |

| and also pointed out by Aishah, Railway employees. If you would closely observe, the fare of 1AC is generally higher than the fare charged by low cost carriers (Air). So, would be prudent to take the flight rather than 1AC unless somebody wants to romance like the OP or who works in Railways and is eligible to travel. |

Nor do I see any evidence of that. Who knows what the question is about really (I had assumed mostly about safety); it had meanwhile struck me with the original question it seemed a little odd coming from an Indian, then again I know many Indians there are far more fearful of and/or inexperienced with travel there than some of us "travelers," so it wouldn't seem impossible. We'll never know until and unless the poster comes back in to specify the question I guess. What is clear from this and another thread of theirs is it'll be the two of them traveling together, and from Bangalore to Jaipur. If that prospect somehow frightens them, I guess a flight could be an idea yes. As noted, price-wise it wouldn't have to matter much. Or then maybe it was just a nonsense question. (Or then checking one more time, they'd mentioned a train ride in the "upcoming days." So they may as well have taken their chances, and are on the train now, or already have it behind them.)

| <In answer to an intermediate question by a third poster that has been removed> What do you expect? Gangs of thuggees in 1AC? Really, I wouldn't worry so much about it. The Indian Railways network is the largest in the world I think, transporting god knows how many people each day, and most of them just as decent as most of us try at least to be. What are the odds of something happening to you. In any of its classes. Again, just use your common sense, and you should be fine. You can get pickpocketed, robbed, raped, or run into a general bunch of idiots on the trains or doing anything else where I live (in The Netherlands). It doesn't stop anyone I know from taking the trains, or indeed from doing much anything else. The odds still wouldn't be very high. (The odds of running into outright and unprovoked violent behavior with perfect strangers I'd say would be quite a bit less in India, for that matter.) It doesn't "prove" anything, nor am I asking you to follow my lead, but as a foreigner to your country, and as many here will attest from their own experiences, I've traveled up and down in it in never any higher than Sleeper or Unreserved Class, and although some friends have had the odd thing going missing that way, or perhaps some men getting a little too frisky or downright annoying with them when they were females (usually easily resolved by calling some public attention to it though I gather), I have personally never had anything untowards happen to me. Ever. Zilch. Nada. Experienced the most remarkable hospitality, rather. Or just plain sitting out yet another lengthy ride together. Again, none of that proves nothing will ever happen to you. Yes, stuff happens, it can, and it does. Anywhere, anytime. Last edited by machadinha; Nov 13th, 2009 at 13:19.. |

But is it your first experience on a (lengthy) train ride in India? If not (or even if yes), you've picked the classiest way to do it. What could logically be the dangers? Like Aishah said, you'll likely have your own personnel and even guard on board, and in a carriage that's shut off to the rest of the train even. If you prefer more (and not fewer) passengers around you instead, then opt for one of the lower classes I guess. | |
