Hi Guys,

IRCTC website is now in new look and feel, seems to be looking good. Lets have a list of opinions through which this site could be me made more user friendly for our fellow travellers.

I would LOVE it, if I could put in my starting station (i.e. New Delhi) and put in my ending station (i.e. Shimla) and it would bring up a list of options... kind of like booking an airline ticket.

I got this site mixed up with www.indianrail.gov.in, but, even though www.indianrail.gov.in frustrates the hell out of me, I'd still prefer to use it for my rail needs.

What do you find frustrating about the website?

Maybe I can help, I've got used to the website and think it is an awesome website, the main problem though is that a user needs a little knowledge of the railways, and that's never easy for a tourist.

If you can list some of the frustrations, I may be able to affer some alternative ways of finding info on the same website.

http://indianrail.gov.in/

I find too many pop ups quite annoying. One of the reason for site getting slow.

Just the speed of the site, my lack of knowledge of railway stations, and just the interface of the website. But I'll keep using it. I know better now then say for example when I was booking my trips from Delhi to Chandigarh and Delhi to Jaipur, because I just thought Jaipur would be Jaipur Station plain and simple.

None of the following have pop-ups, so work a tiny bit faster.

This is the one I normally use, you type in the first 3 or 4 letters of the town and the website gives a list of all possible stations, just click on the correct one (normally 'Jn' (Junction)), watch out though, Indian Railways doesn't always use the same spellings you'll see on maps.

The following link is to 'Trains between metros' (though I just got a pop-up with this one)

http://www.indianrail.gov.in/inet_metro_trns.html

To search using station codes.

The website is really slow today.

What about the taxi services. You need a separate login and even then could not succeed.
It is potentially useful though having pre-booked taxis but I wonder if the taxi companies they are using are sufficiently reliable.

For this facility you can use www.indianrail.gov.in

The other day Steven shared a link with me..

http://www.indianrail.gov.in/inet_srcdest_names.html

just use that you will get all the trains between the two stations, you can check the available classes, how many seats are available in every class, schedule of the train and fare as well. you just select the one you would like to book and then logon to www.irctc.co.in.

I am not sure why all the fuss about the speed, I got the tickets booked in Friday and they were done in a breeze. everything was fast, booking, cancellation everything. I faced problems with the Printout, however I am not sure if it was local to my PC or generic to the site. Y'day I used it a internet speed of 33.6 Kilo Bit/s from a Dial Connection and it still worked very well and I was easily able to take the printout as well...

the prob with the site is basically it takes ages to load and book ticket, more so in IST day time.........so i always book ticket after 9 in night and then its a piece of cake.........

btw around a yr back i was reading somewhere the the main server of irctc has a bandwidth of around 8mbps only which they were planning to increase to 16mpbs ( govt was not releasing more bandwidth or something like that : reason was given)
no wonder with so less speed, server is invariably slow in day time

The IR website is realy slow today, the worst I've seen for a while.

Any big holidays in India on the 9th, 10th or 11th November?
