How are IRCTC waitlists to be understood?. I query for 2A by Uttranchal from Ahmedbad to Delhi (runs weekly on Friday and get
1 13- Jan- 2006 WL 33/WL 19
2 20- Jan- 2006 WL 25/WL 16
3 27- Jan- 2006 WL 6/WL 6
4 3- Feb- 2006 WL 12/WL 8
5 10- Feb- 2006 WL 14/WL 14
6 17- Feb- 2006 WL 5/WL 5


Then I query for 2A by Uttranchal from Delhi to Haridwar (runs weekly on Satday) 1 1 14- Jan- 2006 WL 33/WL 19
2 21- Jan- 2006 WL 25/WL 16
3 28- Jan- 2006 WL 6/WL 6
4 4- Feb- 2006 WL 12/WL 8
5 11- Feb- 2006 WL 14/WL 14
6 18- Feb- 2006 WL 5/WL 5

Ie just the same numbers. How is this to be understood. Arent there separate quotas
for different pairs of stations?.

I am sure you might get the seat for the dates you want to travel on but sometimes in the peak season it may be difficult but you can always buy the "tatkal" or emergency reservation scheme where it is possible to buy a limited number of the tickets on each train only from three days in advance of the journey but you end up paying the whole fare for the journey if the train's destination is a very long distance from your starting point.

vmehra, I think you understand the following, but maybe aadil doesn't, so...

For other people's info.

13- Jan- 2006 WL 33/WL 19 means.....

For the train on the 13th Jan, there were no seats/berths remaining so you would be added to the waitlist at position 33, however there have already been 14 cancellations, so the actual waitlist position is 19.

If you purchaced this ticket and tried to check if your position on the waitlist had changed a few days later, the first number would always remain the same (33), but if there were more cancellations your actual position on the waitlist would improve.

If for example there had been an extra 10 cancellations, your new waitlist position would be 09, and would read WL 33/WL 09.

What aadil said is totally wrong. The numbers has nothing to do with seats and berths. The correct explanation is what steven has given. When you will see the final list at the time of departure, you will have to look for your original WL no i.e. 33 which remains fixed all throughout.

Though I find it very strange to find the status as same for Ahmedabad - Delhi - Haridwar. Is it the same too for Ahmedabad - Haridwar ?

I'm also wondering what the proceedure is if your WL number becomes available VERY shortly before departure..

- Will the tickets still be sent by courier ( what if there is say only one day before departure ) ?

- Will there be provision to 'collect' tickets upon departure ? And how will the payment be made should this be the situation ?

Anyone had experience of very last minute WL availability ?

@@@You are correct. In case of ADI-NDLS (or) NDLS-DDN, it is Remote Location Quota and hence, there would not be any RAC before Waiting List commences.
