Er, well, sites go down. You could call them about it.

How are we to know? The IRCTC site is known to regularly go down in the early mornings as soon as Tatkal tickets go on sale yes, so causing overload. Little to do about it. They should normally spring back into action later (and so now you may have missed your Tatkal booking). Then glitches beyond that will of course occur.

Setting a travel agent to work on it might work. They have ways for it, partly causing that overload and so the problem itself, and/but so they may manage to get you that ticket.

dear macha,

Sorry about it. I check makemytrip (server is down for maintainance )
In these cases what are other options I can have :

1. Booking through agent
2. Booking standing in queue ( but who knows server will be down for maintainance when someone checks it in the morning ). I can't run to the queue as I am sick

Hello Sniper,

Hm, yes. What to say, I'm just a goofy and for that matter highly irregular stranger to your country myself Don't know all the ins & out of it, either.

But, yes, I think I'd set an agent to work on it. (Maybe there's a few next door, or get one on the phone, or something. Maybe you have a friend or family member who can get in touch with one, etc.) The thing with them is if you need it *right now,* and if the servers are dead, they won't get into it, either. (Same at the station, btw. I've had it standing there, perhaps at somewhat lesser stations but far from minor, and now either the network or the electricity is down. OK, nothing for it but to wait, eh.)

Beyond that, if anyone can do it, they will. Maybe we shouldn't be supporting it, since they do clog up and not rarely abuse the system (there are of course perfectly bona fide ones, as well, btw)... but, hey, if one needs to get somewhere Good luck with it, right. Let us know how it goes. Maybe others will have other tips.

Standing in a queue (or several) there forever and being sick and with possibly no result? No, please, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Besides, if normal queues can be madness, I hear those early morning Tatkal rushes can really be insane (and, indeed, quite possibly leading you nowhere). Again, let some agent do whatever they do to do it for you. They may also have access to some quotas unavailable to you, etc.

@sniper2k7: You didn't mention what time today morning. The site sees huge traffic early morning between 07.45-09.00 to 09.30 because of tatkal. Especially on thursday because the bookings for weekends open today.

ps: just tried now. it really seems down.

Due to certain electrical problem, the power supply system has been affected. As a result, the E-ticketing from IRCTC website is down. Attempts are on, to put it back. Expected by 11 AM. inconvenience caused is regretted.

It says it's down until 3pm. Typical, the process of registering and booking tickets looks daunting enough without the damn site being down.

Er, like I said already, websites and servers do go down. (Does your network never break?)

Yes, it's a pain. But it probably happens to all of us, wherever we live.

Welcome to that wonderful modern world, where everything works, and in fully-automated fashion -- unless it doesn't.

(Maybe see Terry Gilliam's Brazil while you twiddle your thumbs )

In the meantime, I guess the best thing for it is just to patiently wait for it to go up again. Working yourself up into a frenzy over it surely won't help to kick-start the server (or the electrical supply then, whatever. You don't think a little generator will resolve that, no, if the whole grid is down? This isn't your local shop having a fridge to run.) Kind of like your car won't if you kick or curse at it. I'm sure there's some techies out there frantically working at it whilst not being quite sure what to do, either. It is after all in that company's interest to be up.

The IRCTC servers have been crashing frequently the last few days. They did mention that they were doing an upgrade which affects the "Delhi node" last weekend. Maybe they just added some high capacity servers and configured something wrong.

There have been a lot of discussionss in other forums regarding the daily "Tatkal crash" phenomenon. There is some proof that it is not a server problem but more like a DOS (Denial of Service) attack engineered by a few travel agents with the cooperation of railway staff.

I would rather travel by bus than pay a dishonest travel agent a fee to get a Tatkal ticket.

Could this be one of the possible reasons?

Techie arrested in railway e-ticket fraud

"A software consultant from Varanasi who developed pirated software and sold it to railway touts who in turn hacked into the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation's (IRCTC) website and booked e-tickets before the online windows opened and sold them in black market was arrested by the Mumbai cyber cell police on Tuesday.

The modus operandi was to hack into the IRCTC website few hours before the ticket window opened and book tickets more and sold it in black market. Police said the scam came to light after complaints from passengers and agents that they were unable to book tickets as the online booking site often showed that tickets were reserved or booked. The IRCTC filed a complaint that there was something amiss. It was then that we found that somebody had hacked into the website"

The article misinforms. The program does not "hack" into IRCTC computers. What it actually does is to run on the client computer bypassing the client side steps that are required to book a ticket and submits an "express" request the moment booking opens at 8AM. This is actually a pretty good copy of what people did with Ticketmaster for popular concerts.

Hmm, now it's 8 pm in India, and the internet booking site is still down. Now it's been about 24 hours!

I guess it's good that "Attempts were on, to put it back," although I wonder about the use of the past tense .
