You do not have to log in to AXIS.

You book your ticket through the IRCTC site. During that process you are asked by which gateway you pay.
It is there that you select AXIS.

Pleease can someone help? I've spent all morning trying to buy our first train ticket (from Delhi to Agra)on the IRCTc site, but I just can't make the payment. The first time I tried to pay it appeared to be going ok, but after writing the card number, pin, etc I had an email to say that they couldn't process the tickets due to "comunications failure", since then I've tried again and again but no luck, with different gateways. For the citi bank gateway it appears that you have to have a citibank card, and for Axis it asks you to log in (but I haven't got a user ID). Can someone tell me which gate way to use for a european visa card (debit or credit, I don't care anymore!) Sorry, post is a bit long, just sooo frustrated!

Miss muffet - you shouldn't be writing the pin no. - it should be only the last three digits on the back of your card, which is a security precaution.

You also don't need to log in for Axis - I think you are going to the wrong gateway for it - go to the one at the very top of the page, which is for credit cards. If you have to log in, you are going to the long list of Indian banks, for debit cards, where people belong to that bank.
Every cloud has a silver lining!

Visa Mastercard Maestro all work fine on the site, and the various payment gateways managed by Indian banks such as ICICI and HDFC.

I was booking 2 tickets last week and didn't have any problem with my german visa-card, it was processed very fast. As far as I remember I was using the Axis-gate. Maybe you just tried at the "wrong" time and should try it allover again.

Yoohoo! Managed to book my first train tickets! In the end I had to use an AMEX card. Thank you all for your help! Just one last question, on the reservation there's no confirmation of the seat nš, it just says that they allot cabin "at the time of chart preparation" (for first class). How do I know which seat I'm in?? Do I look at the station??

I also have booked first class and seem to remember having read somewhere that you will find out about the seat from the conductor/train guard when boarding.

Anyone can confirm this ?

When you get to the carriage you will see a list of names stuck up near the door. You will find out then what number berth you have. If you arrive early and the list isn't yet up, see if the ticket collector or a railways person for that carriage is around and they may have the list.
Provided your ticket says 'Confirmed' and 0000 as well, it means you are definitely booked in that carriage.

Online booking website

What a pain in back to book ticket on Indian Railways using international credit card. I am from USA and visiting India in Feb 2010, trying to book ticket on Indian Railways for last two weeks and was never successful because Indian Railway website has problems in accepting international credit cards. I decided to give a try with makemytrips.com and I was amazed. It took less then 3 minutes to book my ticket.

If you are trying to book ticket with card issued out of India
Try makemytrips.com.
