Indore to Aurangabad
Another question for the oracle...
What's the most direct/quickest route to get from Indore to Aurangabad by train? The best I've found so far is to Khandwa and then to Aurangabad, but I'm not too keen on the fact that the only train I can find from Khandwa to Aurangabad leaves at 4am! Is there another way? |

I guess your going to Aurangebad to get to Ajanta/Ellora Caves.
Instead go Indore - Khandwa - then Bhusaval or preferably Jalgaon. Jalgaon is 55 Kms from Ajanta Caves and connected by a direct road, so there should be plenty of buses. |

I looked on Indian Railway site and this is what they have from Bhopal (2716 Amritsar Nanded Express) and train leaves at 00:10 and its only available on M T Th F Su.
2716 ASR NED EXPRESS *BHOPAL JN 00:10 AURANGABAD 11:25 Y Y N Y Y N Y So its 11 Hrs from Bhopal. and Bhopal should be 4 Hrs if you use a Indore Bhopal bus. I guess private travel agencies (Vijayant, Royal, etc) have overnight buses to Aurangabad. Aurangabad is around 400 KM, so it should take around 10 Hrs to reach there. |

Thanks guys. Yes we are going to the caves and I was thinking that it would be better to stay in Aurangabad for a few days and do a day trip to Ajanta, but thinking about it again - it'll be about an 8 hour round trip on the bus, so maybe we'll stay in Jalgaon to see Ajanta and then move on to Aurangabad to see Ellora.

Hi Willsy
I travelled by bus from Indore to Jalgaon - fantastic scenery - but the road was very busy. After all it is the main road from Agra to Mumbai. As Steven said, it is possible by train with changes and you might prefer that. You could time your departure so that you arrive in Jalgaon in the evening - not a great place architecturally but a pleasant town nonetheless to stay overnight with some very good restaurants. Incidentally there is only one bank in Jalgaon which will exchange foreign traveller's cheques and it is about 5km north of the centre. The bus stand is not far from the railway station - about 2km - and i think buses go to Ajanta every half hour. At Ajanta you use the shuttle buses to the caves from a newish tourist centre with dhabas and small shops. From there, public buses go every half hour or so to Aurangabad and that too is a nice trip. There are plenty of cheap and reasonable GH near the bus stand and regular services to Ellora. I strongly recommend stopping at Daulatabad en route to Ellora. You could, of course go to Aurangabad from Indore and visit both lots of caves separately but you would spend more time travelling. |
