India's 1st Super Fast Double decker train
Here's the news item:

With a top speed of 110 km/hr & a distance of 270 km from Howrah to Dhanbad, why does it take 4 hours? Too many stops along the way?
What happens to the passengers who travel on the roof of trains?
Cheers

There is a train between Bombay and Surat called the Flying Rani. This was a double decker. I don't know if it still is. So how come this new train is the first double decker?
Mumbai-Surat Flying Ranee became a double decker train in 1979 and still runs as a double decker train. However, First Class and AC CC coaches are not double decker. The first to become a double decker train was Mumbai-Pune Sinhagad Express which was introduced in 1978.
According to reports, the new double decker coaches are a design disaster, -- fit for one of the "Only in India" threads!
They were designed too wide at wrong places, so they kept badly scraping the platforms during trial runs!
So, back to the drawing board you think? Nope! They opted for shaving inches off all the platforms instead!
That didn't work out either, -- apart from the amount of work and cost, it caused problems with all the existing coaches of traditional design! And it didn't help the scraping problem much either.
So back to the meetings. They figured that the high-speed coaches were swaying about too much during run. A compromise was opted for (perhaps along with some minor modifications to the design), -- run the high-speed trains at reduced speed, so they don't sway about as much! -- That, perhaps, explains the 4-hour run time for 270 kms.
So don't expect super fast double decker trains all over India anytime soon!

Awesome story.
And we want to put man on the moon. I am sure we will do so, however, I doubt if we can bring him back. Maybe not a bad idea to send all of these corrupt politicians to the moon and leave them there

http://www.anandabazar.com/archive/1110924/24raj4.htmlAfter imposing various guidelines and restrictions, the CRS(Chief Railway Safety Commissioner) has finally approved to start the double decker train worth nearly 50 Crores INR.
However, it has still not been decided how this train shall run in Howrah-Assansol Route.
The initial implementation of this train was postponed due to some technical difficulties. It was seen that upon attaining high speeds, the train was suffering through high horizontal oscillations. Due to which, the coaches used to brush through the edges of the platform. Cutting the edges of the same, did not solve the problem either. Even after repeated inspection by the CRS, no fruitful solution was obtained due to which the train was kept idle for nearly an year.
According to recent reports, the final approval has been given but it is still been contemplated about the exact date of inauguration and the arrival/departure timings. Its been said that if the lines are clear, then this train can run at a maximum speed of 160 kmph which is more than the speed of any Rajdhani/Shatabdi. However, in reality this would not be permissible. It is also been said that due to the presence of some steep curve in the route, speed at the said 15 regions shall be kept very low (15 kmph). To say it all, this train would take nearly 4 hours 20 minutes to travel from Howrah to Assansol which is similar to any other M/E train.
The five main conditions being imposed on this train are:
1) Average speed of 110 km/hr.
2) 15 km/hr speed at 15 specific places.
3) Shall run only on the 3rd line.
4) Shall depart from Assasol in the morning.
5) Can only run for five days in a week.

Don't remember if or when they were used on the Deccan Queen?
Mumbai - Surat Flying Rani is where it was and apparently still is being used. It did feel quite cramped to me.
