Indian trains

Dear All - seeking good help and advice from all you rail vets out there, please! I am going to India in mid-august and wish to travel by express sleeper overnight from Mumbai to Udaipur on Tuesday 19th August, arriving Udaipur on wed 20 august. I am finding it hard to locate trains running regularly to Udaipur from Mumbai - are there any fast overnight sleeper expresses to Udaipur from mumbai? Do I have to change trains? Are the express sleepers daily? Any advice or comments very welcome - I shall be using a 2AC Indrail Pass.

Also, what is the requirement (and advioce) re taking anti malarials (malarone ) in India nowadays?

Very many thanks - DocMike

I think you'll find that the two questions you have asked (How to find a train and Which anti-malarials to take) are the most-discussed topics on India Mike. Search existing threads and you'll find all the answers you need.

Hello docmike and welcome to indiamike.com

Please try to think a little about your thread title, you need to attract people who may be able to offer useful advice, also try to consider other people who may be looking for similar info, they will know to look at your thread if the title describes what the thread contains.

Train 2995 departs Bandra Terminus (Mumbai) at 15:45 and gets to Udaipur at 08:50, the train only has 3-tier air con and Sleeper Class (not air con), and the train only runs on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

A better route for you would be to take an overnight train to Ahmedabad (7-8 hours), then take a 5-hour bus ride to Udaipur, there are many daytime and overnight trains between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

Are you using a period Indrail pass or a 12-hour pass?

Remember that an Indrail pass is just a train ticket, you still need a reservation.

SOS: Missing Person...

Please look at this thread, even if you are not in India.: Have you seen Jonathan Spollen?

He could be anywhere now: You might have met him, be able to help, or give information.

Thank you, Steven - 'mea culpa'! You have made some very helpful suggestions and I'm grateful. I am buying a 21 day Indrail AC2 pass so I guess I'd like to get maximum value out of it. Your idea about trains to Ahmedabad and then exprsss coach to Udaipur is a good one and I'll ponder on that. The 2995 train is annoying in that I wanted to travel on tuesday overnight as I'm already booked into a nice hotel in Udaipur for three nights commencing wednesday 20 Auguusdt. I hadn't realised Udaipur would be so difficult to get to from Mumbai. I'll just have to see what other Members' suggestions are -bookings open up for me on 17 may so I have a couple of weeks yet. Anyway, thank you again for all your helpful comments -one of the great community of travellers! Cheers - Mike

Udaipur was never easy to get to by train. This is supposed to have improved somewhat, but off the top of my head I'd say train to A'bad-bus to Udaipur would be the way to go yes. Seeing how Steve seems to confirm this, I'm pretty confident of it
