Indian Railways launches e-tickets

Indian Railways will launch e-ticketing from August 12.

A good introduction; but do not see the need for the passenger to carry a platform ticket, when he/she has a copy of the confirmed E-ticket with him/her.

Again, it says that the passenger's name must appear on the reservation chart. Surely, that is the responsibility of the railways? What happens if there's a slip up(which is not uncommon with IR) and a bonafide passenger's name does not appear on the chart?

These conditions do not make any sense !

I just tried to book an E-Ticket on the Kalka Shatabdi and found that payment for an E-Ticket cannot be done through Credit Card. One can only use the direct debit facility for making payments.

The railways are also considering other ways to attract passengers such as upgrading passengers to a higher class free of cost if seats are vacant.

Railway sources say they are thinking of starting a system of giving discounts to frequent travellers on the lines of a frequent flyer system.

And are even considering an innovative fare structure giving discounts to those booking early.
