You can book train tickets 120 days in advance in most of the trains.

You can submit a request to the Chief Reservation officer of the station from where you're boarding requesting a coupe,
This is not entirely true. You need to submit it with the CRO at the train originating station which could be different from your boarding point.

Unfortunately I did not know this earlier and for a confirmed booking on the bikaner express boarding from Mumbai I went upto to Mumbai VT station to meet the CRO. And he told me very clearly he couldnt help with coupe allocation from Mumbai and it had to be done from Bikaner.
I needed a coupe because I was going to be travelling with my dog and I couldnt risk not being allotted one - so I didnt have a choice but to cancel the ticket.
If anyone knows how to contact the Bikaner CRO over phone or email please do share on this post because I intend to take this train ( Bikaner Coimbatore express) again, but have no way to request a coupe.

Reduced to 60 days now. Its been well advertised on this and other sites.

The IRCTC site does not have any bookings after 2 months (the dates are all greyed out)

did you mean cost of 'persons' or 'compartment'?

12331 has a half 1A coach (2 4-berth compartments). cost would be ~17000rs for 4 adults.

ac 1st class in Indian railways has 2 berths within the cabin. What I wanted to know is, when I book a cabin, do I reserve the entire cabin, or do I share it with another passenger.

Also as i have come to realize that some ac 1st class do have even four berths per cabin/coupe,
i] are these cabins/coupes reserved by other passengers?
ii] is it possible to confirm what are the berth types in train # 12322, 12809, 12261[1st class]
iii] what is AC 1st class and AC 1 tier as I see in some places?

sorry if I sound dumb. This is the first time im travelling via 1st class in India

Wonderful post. I never travelled in First AC and was curious to know how it looks like from inside. Some more picture (inside cabin) would have been better
