I'm a foreign tourist: Can I use 'General Quota' for e-ticket train reservation?

Hi all

I'm a bit confused about the purpose of the 'Foreign Tourist Quota' on trains.

Are foreign tourists permitted to reserve on the 'General' quota, or do they HAVE to stick to the 'Foreign Tourist' quota?

Context: I am a UK citizen in the UK, booking an e-ticket on the Indian rail system for my trip there next month. Can I use the 'General Quota' for my reservation when reserving from the UK? (It doesn't look as though 'foreign tourist quota' is even available for e-ticket reservations - is that right?)

I know this question was asked fairly recently, but I need clarification to quell my first-time nerves.

Many thanks

yes, you can use "general" quota. I did two train trips in March and never used the "foreign tourist" quota.

Yes, the special quotas are there for when you can't get a general quota place.

The exception to this might be Lady's Quota?

Don't go for the ladies compartment as it is a separate compartment which is not connected internally to the train through vestibules and is at one end of the train which remains outside the platform sometimes!!! And it is just a general coach with not too much security anyway. I feel it is pretty unsafe for a foreigner travelling in India. Just go for the generalquota in the second class sleeper compartment or if you wish to splurge on the airconditioned one go for the 3AC or 2AC depending on how much comfort you wish to enjoy on your trip. 2AC is better as it has only two berths instead of three on one side of the compartment in the coach. A normal sleeper coach will do just fine if you are not too finicky about travelling with middle class Indian families!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

Hi Aadil

The ladies compartment on the Mumbai suburban trains is exactly as you describe, but I thought it was different on long distance trains (A compartment of 6 Sleeper Class berths, with a door), but I must confess, I've never seen the ladies section on a long distance train.
