i-tickets vs. e-tickets
When using the IRCTC.com to purchase train tickets online you can choose either i-tickets or e-tickets.
When booking an e-ticket - is it needed to go to the reservation office to pick up the real ticket, or is it enough to get on the train using the printed data and the relevant ID with Photo? Is that the difference between an I-ticket and an E-ticket? The need to carry photo ID vs. picking up a real ticket? |

i-tickets must be sent to an address in india (or picked up at some stations) whereas e-tickets, as you suggest, can be simply printed off and produced on the train along with the relevant id. NB the id you show on the train must be the same as the one you select when making the online booking.
I have found the new e-ticketing system to work very smoothly. |

In all the big train threads I posted the following............
Adding the following to any thread I can think of to avoid repeat questions. I-Ticket = book on the net, have it delivered to an address in India, a hotel or travel agent for example, you can no longer pick these tickets up at the station. E-Ticket = Book on the net, then print the ticket on your home computer. Advance reservations. Most tickets can only be booked 60 days in advance, a few tickets can only be booked 30 days in advance. (Some Intercity and daytime, short distance trains) Opening times for train bookings. Booking through Internet is allowed from 5 AM to 11.30 PM (IST) 23:30 - 18:00 GMT

What's more you can get the information from the booking site's Help function.

A very important and crucial differences between I-Ticket & E-Ticket are:
1) You can get even Waitlisted Tickets under I-Ticketing but Tickets with Waitlist Status are NOT issued under E-Ticketing. 2) I-Tickets have to be cancelled ONLY across any PRS Counter whereas E-Tickets CANNOT be cancelled across a PRS Counter. ----------- ##It is always advisable to cancel the E-Ticketing before Charting so that you can get back your money easily (**that is credited back to your Bank Account).
