I amaze myself

Thanks to beach and steven_ber , I managed to book train tickets, actually understand what I was doing, and printed off my very own e-tickets. The only slight problem was that my credit cards were not eligible for the verify/password system. It seems the issuing bank has to be a participant for this to work. Fortunately I could use an American Express card which did not need any kind of verification password. I was a bit taken aback when asked for the credit card pin number. Turns out they wanted my postal zip code or at least it worked! So it all ended well. For those of you who are hesitating, I suggest reading the extensive advice and information that beach and steven_ber have so generously contributed. Thanks so much to you both and to the brilliant IndiaMike site.

Scullygirl, great news that you could not only get your tickets but could understand the process behind it as well!

With respect to your statement above, I am not sure which screen you're talking about. However, please note that what you know as ZIP code in USA, is known as PIN code (or just PIN) in India - an acronym for Postal Index Number.

Might be that's why it accepted when you provided your zip code. PIN Code is 6-digit number.

Now that you mention it, I do recall reading that in one of the notes from beach or steven_ber. I entered my 5 digit number, and it was accepted with no problem. On the website, it also prompts for a zip code if the field is left blank.

hey, you learnt something! Going by the posts on the IR forum, you're half way there to full understanding. Now, all you need to know how the waitlisting works. crack that, you're 90% there. and the rest is experience on which trains to take when and where.

I hope the IT-guys maintaining/upgrading the Indian Rly booking systems aren't reading these IM threads!

If they realise folks in US are able to book online, so easily, they may be tempted to add some enhancements ... and steven_ber will have more work
.

In my opinion the IT guys have done a very good job in designing the booking engine considering the complexity and high usage

Oh yes, I can understand if people find it difficult initially, but in the overall scheme of things, u have to give it to the IT guys.

I found the site easy to use. The only problem was the Visa and Mastercard verification. Apparently the issuing bank/institution has to be part of this verification system, and mine were not. But the American Express card worked with no problem.

It's strange, I wasn't asked for Visa verification when booking my E-tickets yesterday. I was dreading it, because, after checking the Visa website my bank was not on the list of participating visa verified banks. I thought I'd give the booking a try anyway, and it worked!! All I was asked to enter was the 3 digit number on the back of the card, same as usual. Too easy :-)

Good to know, I'll try that for the next set of tickets.

That is great news. I hope the rest of the Australia issued cards work as well.

Chip and Pin cards..

Here's a article about the next generation of cards, using a chip and a PIN number, for improved security.Perhaps some of our IM travellers are running into this issue, when unable to use their cards at ATM's in India.. As usual the US lags( Europe and now rest of the world)in adopting new technologies...

Shivani - could you kindly tell us if you used the AXIS payment gateway? I read somewhere (either IM IR threads or IRCTC FAQs) that Axis PG will accept all intenational cards; and I think VBV or MCSecureCode is mandatory only for Indian banks.

If I'm correct, then probably the system checks if the card issuer is Indian or not; if not, it doesn't ask for VbV/MCS !!
