In short, as you can see from the other replies, you just sleep in your regular clothes. No nightie, no jammies. Just take off your shoes and get under the blanket. Anyway, the toilet is at the end of the railcar, not in your cabin, and you don't want to be wandering around in your underwear or pajamas on your way to have a pee in the middle of the night. There's nothing private about the Indian train experience.

Long distance sleeper trains in Australia have 2 classes. 1st Class has two berth cabins, on the really long distance trains, with en-suite bathrooms. On the shorter Qld sleeeper trains (Westlander, Sunlander, Spirit of the Outback) two berth cabins with lockable doors, and a bathroom, with shower etc - at each end of the carriage.
Second Class sleepers have 3 berths to a cabin - and showers at each end of the carriage. In the recliner seat carriages, no-one gets changed to sleep. |

I think you can still manage to undress at the start of the journey, but changing clothes again in the morning or when you reach your destination is really difficult. So,better not change or wear shorts under your trouser....

I've been on many trains (mostly AC2) where men changed from tight trousers to either a longhi or pajama and kurta. I think they use a longhi as a screen, just as women in Varanasi change to a dry saree behind a wet one.

I would, however, love the see the expressions and stares on the faces of locals at the sight of a Western / foreign woman changing (even decently) in front of them.
For women, it would be entirely "feasible" to wear a skirt and change into pants without showing any skin, but I can already picture the look of people (men) seeing the woman pull her skirt off! ![]() In fact, might look a little something like this: ![]() (Just to keep this post on topic, I'm a female and don't change beforehand. Then again, the longest ride I've been on has been overnight.) |

Everyone pretty much looks the same at the end of a journey, like they've been dragged through a hedge with a pair of Pliers.
I did have a thought though, You could change behind a Lunghi, into....a SARI Now that would be something to see, complete with bangles and henna, tell' em you're on your way to be married to a doctor from Hyderabad.!!, and you didn't want him to be disappointed. ![]()

Forget about all this changing - hardly anyone does. Just wear comfortable clothes for the journey and keep them on when you go to sleep.
This is the norm on Indian trains.

Some men slip down to a singlet, and try to keep their shirt a bit unkilled, but that's about it.

Very attaractive title... like the (in)famous toilet threads of IM!
![]() BTW, on an overnight journey, I start with a trackpant and continue till the end of journey. At times, I have wore a shorts below, and just taken down the pants once I am onboard. Just the opposite when I reached destination, simple!

First you take off your trousers and moon everyone. Indians being the frigid and conservative types will gasp and pull the sheets over the head and not peek out for the rest of the night. Then you change into your night dresses. You don't have to say good night; it's been a horrible night for the rest of the chaps in your compartment.
