How to understand figuring train fare?!

I will be travelling india for 4 months and intend to take the train all the way down and all the way up. I need to budget how much this will cost. You guys post good tips, but I can't figure F#@! all on that indian railways site and I don't seem to have one of those handy dandy schedule fare books either!

my planned itinary so far:
last half of december in varanasi and to make it down to kerala.
one month in kerala
feb-march work my way up to himachel pradesh making stops in at least goa, mumbai, rajasthan.

They also have a rudimentary system to provide fares and prices. I checked, delhi to bangalore sleeper class will cost 555 INR (indian rupees, roughly 13 US$). First class costs 3 times as much.
[ 1 US$ ~= 46 Rs]
Varanasi -> Kerala approx 700 Rs
Kerala -> Goa Approx 250 Rs
Gop -> Bombay (300 Rs)
Bombay -> Rajasthan (400)
Rajasthan -> Delhi (250)
Delhi -> HP (300)
