how to get to Nainital from Varanasi

Hi everyone I am about to set out on my first trip to india and think that if anyone knows the answer to my question you people will.
I am trying to figure out how I can get directly from Varanasi to Nainital but it just doesnt look that easy. I love the mountains and from what I have read Nainital,Almore and Kausani are the places to be.
If any of the Indiamike family could help many thanks.

You can go in this route:

Varanasi /Mughal Sarai --- Lucknow (by train ) 5hrs apprx.
Lucknow ------ Kathgodam (by train ) 8hrs
Kathgodam ----- Nainital (by road ) 80 minutes.


If you want to visit almora , ranikhet , kaushani then get down at Haldwani (previous station of kathgodam) , go straight to Almora then Kaushani - Ranikhet & at last Nainital. You will get direct bus services from Nainital to various places including Delhi.

I was woundering if there was a train from Varanasi to Haldwani and then catch a bus to Nainital is this possible??

I dont think there is any direct train between Varanasi & Kathgodam/Haldwani bcoz Lucknow - Kathgodam is Metre guage line while Varanasi - Lucknow has Broad guage line. Any ways Kathgodam is connected by metre guage to Agra, Bareilly and Lucknow. For more details check the Indian railways site.
