Ah btw to add, maybe my above was a little overly optimistic: There's a thing about E-tickets (I think that's the type) where in case of a cancellation, the money gets refunded to the account that it was bought from. You don't get it cash in hand.

So if you live there and bought it from your own bank account, that's fine. But as a visitor there, I've stood at the one end of town at the station and wanting to cancel my ticket, now being informed that it would be refunded to the agent I bought it from, at the other end of (this fairly large) town. Obviously not so fine.

It's something to take into account, certainly. Should be that much more fun if you bought it in another town altogether.

There are two kinds of online tickets...
I-Ticket and E-Ticket...
I-Tickets printed and sent by the IRCTC at your home through courier service and E-Tickets can be printed at home.

One has to visit the PRS (Reservation counter) to cancel I-Tickets and the refund would be transferred to the account.

For E-tickets it can only be cancelled online and the refund is transferred to the bank account same as the I-Tickets.

Old thread, but why start a new one when the question is the same?

I have just tried to cancel a ticket which I had booked via my Cleartrip account. The cancellation failed.

Does anyone have experience with this? Are there any 'common' problems when one tries to cancel a ticket online?

Of course I could call the phone no. in India but I'm trying to avoid this. Last time I had great difficulty understanding the girl on the other end...

Problem solved. It did say 'cancellation failed' but I have since received an e-mail message that confirms successful cancellation of the ticket.

Simple Rule.

You've to approach the Agency who has Booked for You and NOT the END Service Provider for all Cancellation/modification/refund etc.

Better Always Book Straight from END Service Provider like Rail-IRCTC, Air-INDIGO/AirIndia instead of Cleartrip/ makemytrip etc. You save service charges and Transparency is high.
