How many tickets avaliable for each class/train?

Hi,

Im travelling as a party of 4 in december 07.
And we have issue booking e-tickets online, i.e. not enough for all of us.

Is there anyway of finding out how many tickets are available for sale on each train trip for each class, and also how many taktal tickets, and how many foreign quota tickets are available?

Janine

Hello Janine and welcome to indiamike.com

It's not easy, and not guarenteed, but try the following.

Go to the following page.

http://www.indianrail.gov.in/inet_srcdest_names.html

Source Station Name - MURDESHWAR (for example)

Destination Station Name – KANKANADI (for example)

Class - All Class

Then click on Get It.

(Indian Railways is now 'day of week' sensitive, so if the journey you plan to take will be on a Monday, make sure you enter a date that is also a Monday to view all trains that run on a Monday)

onto next page........to get availability.

Click on circle next to train number.

Please check Days Of Run as not all trains are daily.

Look at top left of screen.....

Enter Your Journey Date - 20 - Oct. (for example)*

Enter Quota - General, Foreign Tourist Quota or Tatkal.

Look at the top right of the screen for Classes, click on the circle next to the class you want (make sure it's on the same line as the train you want).

Then click on Get Availability

(for others - If you want to see a few different dates for the same train, do not select a date, the site will give you the availability for the selected train for the next 6 times it runs, and then the next 6 and so on.)

* - search for 55 days ahead, then you'll be shown the availability for the first 6 days that booking is allowed**, this should show the seats/berths available in that class on that train, but remember, other trains will have a different quata.

** - some trains only allow booking 30 days in advance, others allow even less (though I've not noticed any that tourists are likely to use).

I think you also posted about going to Mumbai....be careful on the Indian Raiway website regarding Mumbai, the website is really messed up with too many satalite stations, so choose your train, then click on Get Schedule, find, then copy the terminating station, then go back a few pages and start the search again, this time pasting the exact station name of the terminating station, this way you'll get the full details.

This site can be slow.

Good luck, let me know if there is anything you don't understand.

Also, sometimes you need to know all the stations you can use (so, what places will you be visiting?), for example, Mughal Sarai is only a short distance from Varanasi, but if you do a search for trains from Varanasi (Junction), trains from Mughal Sarai will not be included.

Also, regarding Agra, always try Agra Cant and Agra Fort stations*, and sometimes it's even worth trying Tundla station (about 25kms from Agra) as that station is on the main Delhi-Calcutta route.

* - That reminds me of another trick, the main overnight train from Agra Fort (4854/4864) to Varanasi has a different quota for Agra Fort than it has for IDGAH AGRA JN station, this station is only 2kms from Agra Fort station, so it's worth looking for the quota for both stations.

This happens a lot on Indian Railways, so it's worth remembering and always looking at the schedule for the train to see if the above is possible.

Dear Janine,

>and also how many taktal tickets

##This Quota ias fixed taking into account the demand and as such there would be lot of variations from train to train. But normally, the Tatkal Quota is:

4 Berths per Coach in 2A
6 Berths per Coach in 3A
10% of total accomodation in SL Class
------
Please have a look at this:
..
You Queried For Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code
7256 NARASAPUR EXP 13-12-2007 HYDERABAD DECAN NARASAPUR TATKAL
S.No. Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Class - SL Class -3A
1 13-12-2007 AVAILABLE- 0072 AVAILABLE- 0032
2 14-12-2007 AVAILABLE- 0072 AVAILABLE- 0032
3 15-12-2007 AVAILABLE- 0281 AVAILABLE- 0032
4 16-12-2007 AVAILABLE- 0281 AVAILABLE- 0032
5 17-12-2007 AVAILABLE- 0281 AVAILABLE- 0032
6 18-12-2007 AVAILABLE- 0281 AVAILABLE- 0032
---------------------
##Please note the Tatkal is being increased from 72 Berths to 281 Berths w.e.f. 15.12.2007!!!

waitlist / chart preparation

Passenger 1 W/L 1 ,RLGN W/L 1
Passenger 2 W/L 2 ,RLGN W/L 2
Passenger 3 W/L 3 ,RLGN W/L 3
Passenger 4 W/L 4 ,RLGN W/L 4
Chart not prepared
How long before the train departure does the chart get prepared, and looking at my status what are my chances of getting on to this train, i have been checking on the web for last week but nothing is changing...
I have booked 2A on OKHA from MAO(madgaon) to BRC(vadodara)
There are no direct flights and i have my 80 year old mother with me, coach is out of the question, could hire a car but that is my last resort.
any ideas?

Lightbulb Use www.erail.in to search and www.irctc.co.in to reserve

I have found it much better to use www.erail.in to search for trains because it includes the lesser-known stations, for example Mughal Sarai when your search calls for the city of Varanasi. Also, information for the reverse trip is just a click away. This site provides availability and fare information as well. The only thing you cannot do is book there. So, I jot down all the train info and then go to the official government site to make my reservation. By doing this I've saved lots of time and frustration!
