How likely are waitlisted people to get a confirmed ticket on a train?

How likely are waitlisted people to get a confirmed ticket on a train?

Thanks to some advice from a couple people on here - I'm trying to book a train from Varanasi to Bharatpur. There is a waitlist though. I've got kinda a tight schedule and don't want to be stuck there for a few days waiting for the next train.

here's an example of what I get:

12- Nov- 2007 WL 3/RAC 6

What does it mean?

What would it have to say for me to be really likely to get a ticket?

Not entirely sure - but I think it may mean you have a reservation in Chair Class seat no. 6 and then if they can will move you to sleeper, but you have two bookings before you. If I am right it means you are on the train. But hopefully someone with full knowledge will confirm this! I think if you are not on the train, they notify Not Available on the Internet. Just checked Trains at a Glance - yes, this is correct. I would buy the ticket a.s.a.p. and hope you are still WL 3! You would have a good chance of getting your preferred booking.

Thanks, It's all so confusing! But I may have been able to avoid having to risk not getting a spot.
I'm looking at the bookings now... and I've noticed that there are tickets available for sleeper class in the ladies section. I'd be comfortable with that one and they are available on the dates I want.

Close, RAC means you get a seat in 3A (as that's the class trying to be booked), 2 people get 2 seats, the 2 seats turn into 1 berth, as soon as another place is available (someone cancelling or not turning up) both people get berths.

Book it, RAC should be confirmed by 12th November.

I'm actually looking for a direct Varanasi (or Mughal Sarai/Manduadih) to Fathepur Sikri train, but the Indian Railway website pages are changing about every 5 or 6 minutes, so I'm struggling to get any info.

Nothing found for that date, book 4853 in 3A.

Isn't it frustrating - it takes soooo long! I don't know about getting a train directly to Fatehpur Sikri, but apparently Bharatpur is pretty close (18km away according to my Rough Guide handbook) and I know that there are buses that regularly go from Bharatpur to Fatehpur Sikri to Agra.
The station code is BTE if that helps. I think that train # 4853and 4863 are the only ones that run that route.

Good luck with your train hunting .

Thanks Steven for the clarification - Trains at a Glance is not fully explanatory! I never knew the 2 seats turned into a berth, that's interesting.

It's 2 side berth seats in 2A, 3A and SL.

Some of the clarificaions on railway travels can be had from the Zonal Time Tables. I have Western Zone Time Table; the last 100 odd pages contain passenger information on reservation, status of the ticket, refund, distance restrictions on trains and many more. Zonal Time Tables, I guess, are not available on Indian Railway websites.

I guess, Fatehpur Sikri is nearer from Agra ( 40 kms) than from Bharatpur.

As steven_ber suggested, book the ticket in Train No.4853 in 3AC. You have a fairly good chance of your RAC ticket moving into a confirmed berth on your date of travelling .

Trains at a Glance has websites for Zonal Railways - will check out later, no time now! Are these timetables available at Railway Stations? I had never heard of them. It is handy to have one in book form rather than glued to the computer all day!

You should be able to get the Western Zone timetable in Jaisalmer, this will cover everything down to Mumbai (including 'passenger' trains.)
