How flexible is ths indirail pass?

Hi,

I'm off to India on Monday and have a few trains all booked up in advance as well as having an Indirail pass. I understand that my pass should allow me to travel anywhere in India for the time duration it covers, but I was wondering how flexible it is in reality when comes to actually getting a place on a train at short notice.

In other words if I change my mind about a destination or just want a train 1 day later than planned, is this usually easily sorted at a ticket office? or are trains usually all booked up execpt for the odd hit or miss seat?

grateful for any response and looking forward to the trip.

The pass is subject to the normal rules of reservation, so book ahead if making dates and places is important to you!!

Depending on the class, the Indrail pass gives you access to quotas besides those reserved for foreign tourists, so if there are no VIPs taking the train, you may very well be able to change your mind up to the last minute. But you can't always count on it, so try to give yourself enough time for itinerary changes, and don't cancel the first rezzie before making sure of the second.

I've used First Class Indrail passes to great advantage in earlier years; the last time I had one, there were only two reservations I couldn't get.

One was because it was festival time and the train really was packed full.

The second, there were just no first class berths available; my friend and I scored the last sleeper berth and shared the bed. It was not comfortable, but the people around us were just as crowded and delighted to have us there to amuse them.
