How fast does the waitlist for SL class move?
I have a SL class reservation for Feb 9 (Fri) on train 6526 from Bangalore to Quilon, currently at WL157. It has hardly moved in the last couple of days (started at WL159). The other number is WL185, from which I deduce that only 28 people have cancelled.
I was wondering whether I should make alternate arrangements (bus). |

I'd guess your chances of a confirmed berth are low.
I'm staggered after looking at the Indian Railways website, of all the non-daily trains (and there are loads) that go from Bangalore or Jolarpettai towards southern Kerala, NONE are on a Friday, amazing. How long would it take you to get to Jolarpettai? Could you get there in time for a 19:10 departure? It look to be about 130 Kms from Bangalore. Train 2695 departs Jolarpettai daily at 19:10 and gets to Quilon at 06:15. (the train starts from Chennai) Sleeper class availability for the 9th Feb is 0365 The train also calls at Salem at 20:50, but Salem looks close to 200 Kms away from Bangalore, so maybe not a good option. |

I can't reach Jolarpettai at 19:10 as I need to start after work, but if I was so minded, there is a connection from there that I could make, like the 2658 Chennai Mail to Jolarpettai and then the 7230 Sabari Express on to Quilon. But my wife is disnclined to make a nighttime connection and would rather sit 16 hours in a bus (she has heard that there are Volvo buses).
It is the same case with Northern Kerala as well. The only train that connects Bangalore with Northern Kerala, the 6527 Yeshwantpur Cannanore Express, is on a Saturday. But that region is much more easily reached by bus from Bangalore via Mysore. |

Looking at your waitlist position again, and looking at the waitlist movement on the same train is interesting.
16- 1-2007---WL 467/WL 234 17- 1-2007---WL 307/WL 143 18- 1-2007---WL 194/WL 102 19- 1-2007---WL 255/WL 116 20- 1-2007---WL 275/WL 158 21- 1-2007---WL 192/WL 100 22- 1-2007---WL 109/WL 43 23- 1-2007---WL 125/WL 38 24- 1-2007---WL 352/WL 187 25- 1-2007---WL 443/WL 294 26- 1-2007---WL 272/WL 180 27- 1-2007---WL 160/WL 114 On the basis of those figures, I'd say you have a reasonable chance of getting your berths confirmed (unless there is some festival I'm not aware of). |

A last option.
Tatkal reservations don't seem to be used up on this train, you'd need to book all the way through to Kanyakumari, and pay the heavy Tatkal charge, but it's an option. This Fridays train still has 102 Tatkal places left out of 143. |

Including the Tatkal charge adds about 45% to the journey cost.
Bangalore to Quilon is Rs 299 (without Tatkal) Bangalore to Kanyakumari (& Tatkal charge) is Rs 480 (Tatkal is only allowed if booking for the train's entire journey) |

In my expereince, the number of cancellations a day or two before the deaprture date is normally quite high, i guess this is so becasue one can get a full refund till abt a day bfr. I think you should keep this booking alongwith making alternate arrangements.

Dear Manoj,
You said you are travelling on 9.2.2007 (Friday) and that your better-half is NOT interested in midnight-change-over. Let this ticket be there, which in all probability WOULD NOT GET CONFIRMED, because this is Island Express!!!! On the morning of 4.2.2007, sharp at 8.00 hrs., try for Tatkal Quota and make your journey a comfortable one. V.Srinivasa Prasad 17.1.2007/9.55 hrs. |

You never know, what waitlist nuber is getting confirmed in different trains.
Railway is reserving at least 35-40% of ticket these days in Tatkal quota, just to earn more money. In IInd AC its close to 50%. In your train they have 143 tickets in SL. They wil release all these unused tatakl ticket at the time of making chart to waitlist passenger. I had WL#212 in Chennai-Baglore last friday in SL and got confirmed very easily. |
