Hi,

I'm new to India Mike and still trying to navigate so please be kind. Myself and my boyfriend are going to India for the first time in September and want to mostly travel by train. I just want to know how early we should start looking at booking seats? What are the most popular routes? The plan, roughly, at the moment is to fly into Delhi, take an overnight bus to Dharmasala to see the Dalai Lama, then go north to Chamba valley. Then go to Amritsar and then take the toy train in Shimla, then down to Haridwar and Rishikesh, then onto Corbett National Park, then back to Delhi for a couple of nights. Then we want to go to Fetehpur, Sikri then onto Jaipur, Jaislmer, Jodphur, Udaipur, Bundi, Gwailor, Agra, Lucknow, Varanasi, then from Varanasi catch a train to Kolkuta, where we fly out. Is this an okay route to take? If not, can anyone make suggestions so we are not backtrackking? We will be in India for 7 weeks but will be spending about a week in Dharmasala so effectively 6 weeks. Have I missed anything? Have we tried to cram in too much? Will I need to book ahead for these rail connections? Thanks so much for your help

Hi

Welcome to India Mike. If you have firm plans then the sooner you book your train tickets the better. Most trains open for booking 120 days before travel so September is already in the window.

Have a look here http://www.indiamike.com/india/india...012-a-t165379/

Depending on which train you want to take on the Kalka - Shimla you may be better with an irctc account rather than Cleartrip

I just tried to sign up to Cleartrip using the guide on seat61 but you need a indian mobile number (+99) to use it. Is there anyway around this?

Seat 61 covers this problem at step 3 of their instruction s on how to open a Cleartrip account. Use the first 10 digits of your UK mobile number.
