1.) I was doing a dry run to see if I am able to access the site, login, search for a train and eventually reach till the make payments page for travel from NDLS to CHKB (Chakki Bank)

Since its going to be a Tatkal ticket, I logged in today and searched for trains and it showed me REGRET for Tatkal tickets on 5th April (today is 4th)...which implies the quota is exhausted.

However, it was showing me some berths still available for 6th April, in the same Train 11077 Jhelum Express from NDLS to CHKB.

And it wasn't just displaying the results, it also showed the BOOk hyperlink to go ahead and book the tickets. I clicked book, reached the passenger details page and finally reached the Payments page. The available tickets were WL by then... but that's not the point.

I fail to understand how is it allowing me to book a tatkal ticket for a journey 2 days in advance. More than 48 hrs, as the train starts from NDLS at 20:20 on 6th April. See attachment for proof.

2.) Also, I was trying to check the seat availability for JAMMU RAJDHANI between the same stations on erail.in and it always shows NOT AVAILABLE, for all dates...

Why is that so?

1) It is pretty normal. The date of tatkal opening is calculated based on the date of departure from the originating station of the train. In your case, Trn# 11077 leaves Pune at 1720 hrs on day 1, reaches Delhi the next day evening (day 2 of journey) and reaches final destination (JAT) on day 3. Therefore the Tatkal quota for this train will open (for passengers intending to board from Delhi) on day 0, which in your specific case was today (4th Apr'12).

2) I'm unsure, ad have something at hand! I'm sure someone else would help!

Thanks for the prompt reply. this does make sense.
So to understand correctly, if I want to travel on 12th April from NDLS, the train would have started from Pune on 11th Evening, so I should try and book the TATKAL on 10th April 08:00, correct?

As of now it shows 216 available in SL class and 64 in 3AC. If this is how tatkal is done, then I believe this will be known to all masses and I should face equal traffic while booking in the morning?

For General quota, 1A has no quota for NDLS-CHKB - it is only for NDLS-JAT. For 2A/3A, gen quota is there, but shows WL now.

For Tatkal quota, 2A/3A has no quota for NDLS-CHKB - it is only for NDLS-JAT. You might have to book the entire leg but get down at CHKB.

Your understanding is correct. We should be lucky that it now allows tatkal booking this way in IRCTC. I recall last year it would not allow booking on the next day, indicating that Tatkal can only be booked 2 days (which was the rule then) in advance.
Or perhaps this worked for you only because there is a separate Tatkal quota for NDLS onwards...

Yes, everyone knows about this & it is impossible to fight the touts at the counter whose tickets are punched in well before the system caters to the 1st passenger in the queue. Also, even if the net connection & IRCTC works fine, the payment gateway transaction takes enough time to ensure it is WL by the time booking happens...

Hasn't it been brought back to one day before? You see two days still often confusingly mentioned here, I guess since it was like that for long.

Mach

The new rule is that you can book Tatkal one day before the train leaves its original departure point. If the train is travelling for more than a day, as a good many do, this means that trips on the later part of the route can be booked two days before or potentially even earlier for the really long trips.
