Himgiri Express - Jammu to Kanyakumari - Anyone Done it ?

The once-a-week Jammu to Kanyakumari Himgiri Express is surely India's longest single train journey. Has anyone travelled the whole length on it, with stopovers, if necessary ? It'll be interesting to hear about the experience !

That's right. And I've travelled in Himsagar many times, but not all the way to Jammu, and it was not interesting at all. When it started it was one of the best trains around, but then somehow it became one of those ignored trains, which get all the really crappy wagons and arrive at weird times at stations. It also used to get pulled over in the middle of nowhere for goods trains to cross! Not sure what the status is now.

This is one of the worst possible trains if you want to cover that distance at one go. It is slow, badly timed and takes the longest possible route via Central railway.

If you want to travel from Jammu to Kerala or the southern tip, take the Rajdhani express from Jammu to Delhi.
Then the Rajdhani express from New Delhi to Trivandrum or the Kerala Sampark Kranti express.

I am saddened to read what mazha and Maha Guru Indizen have written. Being one of India's longest single train journeys (the other being the Guwahati-Thiruvanantapuram(that's Trivandrum !) Express, I thought it would be fun, traversing so many different regions, cultures and people !! What Indizen suggests is surely a much more luxurious alternative !

This is the gloomy end of many of India's fast trains. Superfast Gomti Express, Lucknow-Delhi, had only three stops to begin with, covering the 540 km journey in 6.5 hours;it has now degenerated into a multi-stop 'normal' snail-train. Also, the Shatabdi Express, started as a Lucknow-Delhi direct train with one 5 min. stop at Kanpur. Now 3 or 4 extra stops have been added, slowling it considerably. Himsagar Exp.,was once a day train, covering the 1000km. between Howrah and Lucknow in 14 hours, starting at 6am and arriving at Lucknow at 8pm - now it is a multiple stop 'slow' overnight train taking, 23 hours for the same journey. Woe befalls a a decent train when MPs' sights fall on it, through whose constituencies it travels ! Esp. if the MP is from the ruling party !!

I am looking forward to do a similar kind of journey once the trains go up to Srinagar.

Dear Steadyfriend,

6317 CAPE-JAT Himsagar Express has got 20 stops between Renigunta and New Delhi with a running time of 36 Hrs. to cover the 2129Kms. WHEREAS the 2625 TVC-NDLS Kerala Express has got 16 stops with a running time of 33 Hrs.

But the 6317 is stopped in New Delhi for about 2h50m for operational reasons. Please look at this:
---
41 NZM H NIZAMUDDIN 1 20:35 21:15 3116 3
42 NDLS NEW DELHI 1 21:40 00:10 3123 4
43 DKZ DELHI KISHANGNJ 1 00:20 00:22 3127 4
