We (myself, my wife and two children) will be travelling to India in approximately two months. After a lot of thinking and planning and changes of minds, we have a great itinerary (covering the north and south over six weeks), and have reservations on all of our trains in 2AC class.

Our concern is that we are separated on every single journey. On some, we are in pairs (one adult and one child, or two children together!); on others three of us will be together, and the other one separate.

I understand that the most common option is to ask the TTE to swap, but is there anything else we can do other than hope for the best; and accept it if we are separated (hopefully not on all the journeys)

Many thanks.

You ask your co passengers usually, the TTE may not be of much help the passengers are not willing to move. (However the TTE can guide you to the passengers who are single and more likely to shift)
Once the tickets are booked, there is not much one can do except after you board the train. (not much before booking the ticket as well, except click the option of booking tickets only if booked in the same coach)
Now usual way of asking the passenger to shift is before they have settled down in their berths. Once the luggage is put in and they settle down, it is difficult to convince them to shift seats. So try and do that as soon as the person comes to the seat.
Also try and see that you exchange your seats with people having similar destinations. You wouldn't want the person you have exchanged your seat to get off mid way and the next passenger coming in insisting of occupying the allotted seat only.

Thank you for that reply. We will try our best, but it does sound as if the art of acceptance and some fatalism may be useful psychological tools!
