Goa to Mangalore

Greetings,

There was previously a thread created regarding travel from these two destinations, however I am unsure of how outdated that thread may be.

I need to find information about traveling from Goa to Mangalore via train; I do not know the different classes available, nor do I know anything about the prices.

If anyone can offer me some guidance on the train fare, the different classes available, and perhaps how I may book my ticket, it would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

Thank you

hello rnutter, and welcome to indiamike

There are too many options for anyone to list, trains, type of acommodation on those trains, daytime & overnight trains etc.

it would be a lot easier if you told us your own preferences, where you'll be in Goa, if you plan to book the train in advance or just show up for the train, when you want to do the journey (date, daytime or overnight), if you want to stop anywhere along the way, if you have to be in Mangalore for any reason (train/bus connection for example).

I will be in Madgao, and I do know from reading some of the other threads that there are trains that travel between Madgao and Mangalore. However, I just don't know which trains travel between the two cities, and where I can find information about them.

I would prefer to travel in first class, or at least a class that is comfortable with Air Conditioning. I will be staying in Madgao for about 5 days, so I would like to book my ticket in advance; I would also like to do the journey during the day, so that I could arrive there in the afternoon with no stop overs.

There are no daytime trains with First Class (air con or not), only 2-tier air con (Rs 715) and other classes.

The daytime option isn't great (unless you're travelling in the slow, lower class passenger train), the trains only run on certain days of the week and start from a long distance away, so may run late, these trains also need to be booked as far in advance as you can, they fill up fast.

Go to www.erail.in and search for trains between Madgaon and Mangalore, once you get the results you can change the order the trains are listed, you can list them by the day of week they run, or by the class you want to travel, or by the time the trains run.

Dear rnutter,

Can you, atleast, now, indicate the approximate date/time of departure from Madgaon for Mangalore? After all, this journey cost you a journey time of 5 to 6 hours - a distance of 318 Kms.

Thank you for this website, it is very useful! So, I have decided that I would like to travel during the night, anywhere after the hours of 11 pm. However, I inputted the information needed into the website MAO>MAQ and then MAQ>MAO, however every option I click on it says that the train has been cancelled or that there is an error.

Now that I have this website, the only issue I am having is that I do not know the difference in class - What is the difference between 1A, 2A, 3A?

Thank you once again!

So you'll try to book on train 2619 or 6345, preferably in that order as 6345 calls at Kankanadi (I think this station was renamed Mangalore Junction), and Kankanadi is a few kms outside of Mangalore.

Have a look in the 'Train Information' thread (link in my last post) for more details about trains.

1A = First Class air con
2A = 2-tier air con
3A = 3-tier air con

Look for Matsyagandha Express and Netravathi Express. Also Mangala Express. The first goes to Mangalore city, the other two stop at Kankanadi, which is near Mangalore, but is not well connected with the city. I recommend Matsyagandha, even though it reaches Madgao at some crazy time in the night.

Any train that goes to Kerala via Konkan Railway will go to Kankanadi, so try typing in Kannur (a city in Kerala), instead of Mangalore as your destination.

erail.in links Mangalore and Kankanadi, so any search will show trains that call at either station, the only train erail doesn't show is the daytime passenger train (erail seems to have a problem with pass. trains), the passenger train (KR1 I think, check out the Konkan Railways website) departs Madgaon at about 13:00 and gets to Mangalore sometime after 20:00, it has 2S (bookable 2nd class seat), and doesn't normally get too crowded, so just turning up and buying a single 2nd class unreserved ticket is an option, a very useful train for getting to Cancona, Gokarna Rd, Murudeshwar, or Udipi, the passenger train departs Mangalore early in the morning and gets to Madgaon at about 12:00, the train often runs about an hour late in each direction.

The Matsyagandha Express (2619) seems the best train if traveling from Madgaon, though the Netravati Express (6345) would be best if traveling from points further north as it calls at Thivim (north Goa beaches) and Karmali (Old Goa) before Madgaon, this would give longer on the train for a sleep.
