Goa to Chennai
Hi there,
Does anyone know how often the train runs from Goa to Chennai, how long it takes and would you need to book in advance? I am currently in London but will be in Goa mid November and then my friend and I will be going to Chennai end of November. Would that give me enough time to sort out a train ticket from Goa? Thanks everyone! freebird |

There's a weekly Chennai-Goa train. Leaves Goa for Chennai Thursdays, Chennai for Goa Fridays, takes about a day, goes via Bangalore.
You can book it right away online via www.irctc.co.in. The station codes are MAS for Chennai and VSG for Vasco Da Gama (Goa rail-head). If you need to do it for another day of the week, route yourself via Bangalore. Buses ply Goa-Bangalore, comfy overnight sleepers are available, and Bangalore(SBC)-Chennai trains are easily available - a six-hour ride. |

Hi there,
I can't book this online but do you think there would be any trouble getting a train even if it's via bangalore without booking? I have to wait until I arrive in Goa 15th November to book the ticket but we need to get to Chennai between 30th Nov (when friend arrives) and 3rd Dec as catching a plane to Andamans. I can book it as soon as I arrive but I am worried that there may be no trains on those few days before our flight. Thanks, Freebird |

The two trains that could work for you are 7310 Ypr Biweekly Express and 2779 Vsg Sbc Link Express. There's only a handful of tickets left on both (less than 80 AC in all, the former one also has about 280 second class tickets at the moment), and these are likely to get snapped up way before 15 Nov. They leave Vasco Da Gama (Goa rail-head) 30th evening, arriving in Bangalore 1st morning, and you could easily get a train/bus to Chennai from there in time for your flight on the 3rd.
If you're having problems booking online on www.irctc.co.in, you could try www.makemytrip.com/railways. But if you simply can't book online, plan on hopping a bus to Bangalore from Goa. Sleeper buses cost between 750 and 900 and are overnight. www.redbus.in offers online booking at these rates, though you're likely to get several options (probably cheaper) at short notice when you're in Goa. You could book a Bangalore-Chennai train after arriving on 15 Nov, for 1 Dec. The direct train to Chennai definitely won't work as it only departs on 3 Dec. The Andaman Islands are awesome that time of year, enjoy your trip! You'll probably bump into a group of German/Swiss/French guys if you go to Havelock at that time, and if they look like university students, they're probably my friends ![]() |
