Goa Express Alone

I am debating whether to take the Goa Express from Delhi (41 hours). I enjoy trains and thought it would be a good way to see some of the countryside. I will be travelling alone and although I have read everything on women travelling in India, I'm not sure if 2 nights on the train alone is a good idea.

Hi Caliro and welcome to indiamike.com

41 hours is a long time on a train, I once done a 24-hour journey and it was long enough for me (and I didn't get any hassle).

If you travel in any air-conditioned class, you would be better taking the Rajdhani from Nizamuddin (Delhi) that departs at 11:00 on Sundays and Tuesdays and gets to Madgaon (Goa) 25.5 hours later at 12:25.

The last 4 hours of this journey are very scenic.

It is train number 2432 and costs: -

1A = Rs 5430.
2A = Rs 2915.
3A = Rs 1985.

The Rajdhani (Capital) trains are India's premier trains.

in days of yore, there were ladies only bogies. Anyoine know if this is still the case? Western women used to rave about them!

I've had a little look for info on the net and in timetables regarding ladies only carriages; the only info I could find was regarding 6 berths being reserved in a sleeper class carriage.

I have seen other posts by women talking about these carriages, but always in sleeper class.

Suburban commuter trains have ladies only carriages.

Most of the trains do have a "ladies only" coach, it is normally at the very beginning or at the fag end of the train. This is a second class unreserved sitting compartment and is really useful for a lady travelling alone for short, day journeys.

In some trains, there are 6 berths in an SL class coach reserved for ladies, as Steve has pointed out. These berths even have a door so that the ladies can lock it at night.

tinted windows

Thanks for the helpful info. Is the train only AC with tinted windows or is there a class where I can see the landscape?

Thanks again.

The Rajdhani Express is fully AC, so there is no class with open windows. However, the tinted windows still permit you to see the landscape from the comfort of the AC and I strongly recommend your travelling by the Rajdhani.

The only drawback is at night, when one can see only one's reflection in the window ! Of course, its anyway too dark to appreciate the landscape at night !

Happy journey !

You will feel quite safe especially on a Rajdhani or any 3 tier AC or higher class. There is a conductor and a waiter for your car, plus the people around you will look out for you and your things. The boogies are locked at night so "strangers" can't come on board.
