From Mumbai to Hampi

Dear all,

1st of all, excuse my poor english, english is not my mother tongue. I will arrive in Mumbai on the 28th of January and we want to go to the south. I would like to see Hampi.
I don't know what would be the best itinirerary :
1st one : Mumbai - Bijapur - Hampi - Goa and then to Mangalore
2nd one : Mumbai - Goa - Hampi - Goa - Mangalore

What are your opinions ?

Thanx,
Kala

We travelled from Mumbai to Hampi back in November. This involved an overnight train from Mumbai to Guntakal Junction and then onwards by bus to Hampi via Hospet. The Mumbai train misses the onward connecting train to Hospet by about an hour, hence having to go by bus. The bus journey took nearly 4 hours and was the most uncomfortable trip as the road is non-existant in places and the local bus seemed not to have any springs. The total journey time was about 24 hours. However, Hampi is more than worth the effort of getting there.

I think you can get a train from Panvel or Kalyan directly to Hospet, I think that the train is going to Bangalore or Mysore and part of the train splits at Hubli and goes past Hospet, I will check and post later.

Panvel and Kalyan are easily reached by local trains from Mumbai.

I got it wrong on every count.

The Goa Express splits at Londa with part of the train going to Hubli, not further on to Hospet.

Also, the closest the train gets to Mumbai is Pune.

Hi, kalakuta!

I don't know which is the better of the two routes you suggested (ending in Mangalore), but if you haven't done this already, check out http://www.indianrail.gov.in/testmap.html, as this will show you at a glance how easy or hard it will be to get anywhere by train. As you can see, Mumbai and Hampi are not so easily connected!

I think (just to complicate things still further!), you could look at yet a third route, involving a combination of air and train. Check out Air Deccan and see if you can get a cheap flight from Mumbai to either Bangalore or Goa (they service both). There are three or four overnight trains weekly from Goa to Hampi (and a nightly bus). From Bangalore, I think connections are even better -- daily overnight express trains.

You might find that your easiest (and not expensive, as air Deccan can be CHEAP!) route could be something like this: Mumbai-Bangalore by air; Bangalore-Hampi by overnight train; Hampi-Goa by overnight train; Goa-Mangalore. No doubling back, and no buses (which, as someone said above, can be uncomfortable on long journeys).

The 2nd one is the better option.

I'm not suggesting a route, just giving you the train options.

On Sundays, Mondays & Tuesdays a passenger train (1329) departs Mumbai CST at 22:45, this train gets to Bijapur at 11:10 the next morning.

First Class (not air con) = Rs 586
Sleeper Class (not air con) = Rs 151

If you click on the link below you will find details of trains between Bijapur & Gadag, and details of trains between Gadag & Hospet (for Hampi).

If you scroll up to post 5 in the above link, you will find details of trains between Hospet and Goa, (post 10 has details of trains between Mumbai & Goa).

There are daytime & overnight trains between Goa & Mangalore.

Mumbai to Hospet (Hampi).

Train 1017 (1035 on Tuesdays) departs Dadar (mumbai) at 22:45 and gets to Hubli at 14:28 the next day. (2A, 3A, SL)

Train 6591 departs Hubli daily at 17:00 and gets to Hospet at 19:55. (1A, 2A, 3A, SL)
