I suspect that he was telling you what he thought that you wanted to hear. I'm certain that the seats that he got you must have come from some other quota.

I can only find one train listed from Howrah to Vasco and it has no FTQ allocation. FTQ is not available to book online so he must have been looking at something else. I doubt that there is a train anywhere on Indian Railways that has 27 seats/berths in FTQ.*

Here on IndiaMike we try very hard to help people get the best out of the Indian Railways reservation system. The advice given very rarely involves using an agent. Most of the time you can get the right result without helping to make a middleman rich.

*CORRECTION - The Poorva Express from New Delhi to Howrah appears to have a total of 32 FTQ berths across 3 classes.

Have not seen any train in any class have 27 berths in FTQ. He might have been talking about Tatkal. Most trains have just 2 or 4 berths in FTQ.

I bet he didn't show you. Sales/Marketing talk: he might have said something that he judged was a balance of what you wanted to hear and what you would understand. That's how these people work all over the world, from the market stall to the MNC boardroom software demo.

Please note that there are decent agents who will simply provide a no-bullshit service of making bookings for people who cannot, or don't want to, do it themselves. You'll find them in ordinary streets; you won't get dragged into them by touts, and they will make a small charge for their services. They may also give valuable advice on train availability.

I suppose because my previous Indian experiences were before ticket buying was done online it hadn't occurred to me that i had to open an online account, i thought we just went to the station and made a reservation.
That's definitely not FTQ as the train from Hospet to Vasco has a grand total of four berths available for booking under the FTQ (Berths 20 and 21 in coach S10 and berths 37 and 38 in coach A2)

Indian reservation counters are definitely confusing for a newcomer (and I suspect most Indians as well!). You need to have most of the information on hand, fill in the form correctly, and if there's a long queue behind you, you may not have much time to ask the clerk anything.

For information on trains and seat availability, try 90di.com, which is amazingly simple to use. You cannot however book tickets on this website.

I just want to make sure that FTQ tickets are available on the two following trains: Dehradun Shatabdi (12017) and Dehardun Janshatabdi (12055). I'm travelling from Delhi to Haridwar and I used the FTQ last time. Also, I remember having to pay in USD, is that correct?

All the FTQ info is on this thread.

Right. When I use the indiarailinfo.com site, it says, I think, that there are 4 available, then when I refresh it, they disappear. Also, I forget if payment is made in USD or INR?

Both of those trains have FTQ. Which class do you want and what date. You pay in Rupees. According to the rules you need to be able to prove that they have been obtained by exchanging hard currency. This means exchange slips or ATM vouchers. In practice it seems that this evidence is not always requested but better safe than sorry.

Thanks, Dave W. Class doesn't matter as I think both are Chair Cars and I'm comfortable in either. I would like to travel May 30 or 31.

Secunderabad - At the Railway Reservation Complex which is a building located at one end of the Secunderabad Railway Station, just adjacent to Rathifile Bus station
Other posters may know of something nearer.

There is a map on this link. It also shows the Rathfile Bus Station mentioned above. http://indiarailinfo.com/station/map/835

It is about 9km from Hyderabad Nampally
