| First time travellers in India need help! Hi, we're an aussie/kiwi couple travelling in India for the first time and need some advice. We have a month there(from late April), flying into and out of Delhi and would like any suggestions of places to go/avoid. We want to travel by train the whole way if possible, and were thinking of doing a west coast-east coast loop. Would this be possible in a month? We're open to suggestions of where to go and haven't made any concrete plans, but would like to go to Kerala. We have budgeted 50GBP per day between us for all expenses. Is this a reasonable amount? Any and all advice/suggestions welcome. Cheers |

| this is Brad. He's cute | There's many threads on travel. maybe check out the Kerala threads and train travel etc. But I think fifty pounds is plenty, especially if you travel by Sleeper, and not a/c/train. The distances are doable in a month, just need to pick what you really want to see, and then change your mind when you get here. I would say, don't book too many trains before you come. You will find that you change your mind a lot. A chance meeting here, a new place there, it will constantly change your itinerary and your plans. Jai Guru Dev.

| 1) GBP50 is a significant amount for a daily budget - that's around Rs.3500 per day. 2) it's going to be warm from April, be prepared with a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen. 3) if you're going to be down in Kerala, it would make a lot more sense to fly into Delhi & out of Mumbai, Trivandrum or Chennai, to save backtracking too much. 4) Places to avoid... this will depend on your own itinerary and what you want to see - everyone is different. you haven't listed anything you want to see /do /experience, so your question is too open. Cheers Zoltan

| Just to back up what Zoltan is saying - yes, its going to be hot (as in 40 degrees plus). Possibly that will have the biggest impact on your travel plans as you'll want to give you self plenty of time to get around and do things (i.e - move slowly in the heat). Since you're flying into and out of Delhi - a day trip to Agra and the Taj is a good idea (and easy enough to do out of Delhi). If you find you need to escape the heat then a trip into the hills might be on the cards (Darjeeling, maybe Shimla, etc ). Just be aware that this is where everyone heads for exactly the same reason. Also as Zoltan mention - have a look at the internal flights if you plan on travelling any great distances south. In some cases - the cost is not much greater and internal airfares are coming down in recent weeks as the price of fuel drops. good luck

| Thanks for the advice guys. We might have to re-think our plans and just do a west coast trip, spending more time in each place. We'll also check out domestic flights as an option. Are there any particularly good websites for domestic flights? |

| this is Brad. He's cute | There's a thread on here I think. But Jet airways are pretty good, but hell, it's only an hour or so anywhere. |

| this is Brad. He's cute | I just did the house boat 1 day backwater cruise. It was really nice, paced really well, great, and I mean great lunch. I booked it at the Kerala Govt. Tourist office in Fort Kochin. 500 rupees I think. really nice. We went with a honeymoon couple from Mumbai and a couple of young french girls. It was lovely. The jungle is so peaceful. We found out the guide only gets paid 80 rupees a trip, so we all put in and gave him and the deckhand a bit more. I'm from Colac in Victoria, but now I'm in Armidale NSW. New England coz of the weather I suspect. More northern Scotland if you ask me. Cheers, have a great time. |
