I've booked couple of tickets (for me and my wife) through IRCTC in first class AC to travel from Chennai central to Howrah by train number 2840 (Howrah Mail). There were 4 tickets before I booked.
We wish to have a 2 berth coupe allotment. But as there were four tickets while I booked, I doubt whether we will be alloted a 2 berth coupe? Moreover, in the iternary I failed to give any clue that we are married couples (say, for instance, using the same last name or mentioning as Mr. & Mrs. X, etc). So still do we have a chance of getting a 2 berth allotment?

Your help in this regard will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Each 1AC 'bogie' has just one two berth coupe. You have to specifically ask for a coupe at the time of booking; don't think you can do it online.

Maybe going to a booking counter will help get that one coupe, if available. Other two tickets will be elsewhere.

I was on the Nilgiri Express last month, the 1AC 'bogey' had two
'2 berth' coupe's. The allotment was done at the time of chart preparation, and not at the booking counter.

We were allotted a 2 berth coupe even though we didn't specify Mr & Mrs X.

Some where else on this forum, someone suggested meeting the station master !!

Dear Captain,

Each 1AC 'bogie' has just one two berth coupe.

##If it is HA1, there will be only one Coupe.

##If it is H1, there will be three coupes.

##But in 2839/2840 and 2841/2842, there is only one HA1 Coach.

##But, in 7255/7256, 2727/2728, we have one H1 Coach.

I have requested a first AC coupe and did this by requesting in writing to the director of reservations or someone. And it is given on first-come-first-serve. I was also told that if a "VIP" comes in, the VIP will be given priority. You should go to the station in advance(earlier the better) and give this letter. Find out from reservation.

Hi Andu,

I am new to Indiamike. I saw this post, I have a similiar query. I am planning to travel from Delhi to pathankot by 4033 Jammu mail in First AC. While checking the indian railways site I found that there are 13 seats in first AC in this train if travelled the entire route(from delhi to Udhampur) but for travelling from Delhi to Pathankot its showing only 4 seats. I guess there is some quota of only 4 seats from Delhi to Pathankot.
I would be travelling along with my wife.My question is is there any way by which I can ensure that I get the 2 seat coupe? I mean that since there are only 4 seats available for booking between stations delhi and Pathankot would they be alotting in that way? DID YOU GET THE 2 birth COUPE?
I saw in some similiar posts that reaching the station early and reaching out to the station manager can help. Can somebody please elaborate in case they know the procedure?
It would be very helpful for me in case I get a quick reply because I have to do the booking on 21st of September, if there is no gurantee of 2 birth coupe I may plan for 2nd ac.Please reply

There is never a guarantee of the 2-berth coupe allotment.
Everything is considered at the time of chart preparation. If you are the only couple, you will get that 2-berth allotment.
On the other hand you may get a 4-berth allotment with 2 other person also.

There is only 1 2-berth coupe in that class usually.

And the computer that makes the allotment has no way of knowing that you are a couple other than the fact that you are booked on the same PNR. It has to be done manually.

This brings me to an interesting question.

Considering there is no guarantee of getting a two berth coupe, what can be any other reason a person travelling with his/her spouse will want to book 1A rather than 2A. This has baffled me for quite some time. If someone can enlighten me, it would be great.

Comfort levels in 1A, even in a 4-berth cabin is better than 2A, is it worth the extra money, no way.

Similarly, comfort levels in 3A are better than in Sleeper Class, but on a value for money scale, 3A isn't worth the extra money.

But both those statements are just my opinion, and I know for a fact that many foreign tourists feel the extra money for 1A is worth it for what they perceive as extra security, and also many, many people feel that the extra money for 3A is worth it for the same reason.

Steven, I think comparing A/C vs non-A/C is not always proper. There are some people who prefer to travel by A/C (due to various reasons) and then SL is not an option. Now between 2A and 3A, it makes sense only when someone is travelling with family i.e. need some privacy. But based on your reply above it seems (other than for very very specific reasons like business) it makes no sense at all to go for 1A, especially when you can have a confirmed berth and seat no at the time of booking for the lower classes.

Booked First Class in Delhi Jaisalmer Express

Hi Steven,

First of all thanks a lot for providing such useful information.

I have booked first class ticket from Jaipur to Jaisalmer for my Honeymoon through irctc.co.in. The 'Class' available in my ticket is 1A. I am wondering if I will get the coupe as my ticket the class is 1A.

Also, as per you in the DLI-JSM experess there are 2 berths allocated for the Jaipur-Jaisalmer quota. My question is do I need to put an extra effort(filling up forms) to get the coupe or I will be allocated the coupe by default.

I am concerned as the train will be coming from Delhi and the coupe can be preoccupied by someone else.

Please provide your inputs regarding this.

You've not got much chance of getting the coupe, there is only 1 on that train and it will almost certainly go to someone traveling from Delhi to Jaisalmer.

You just book the tickets as normal, it doesn't make a difference how you book.

Thanks Steve for your reply.

Anyway I have to continue with the 1AC plan considering higher security. I am trying to request the Reservation Chief of either Delhi / Jaipur to get the coupe. I know that there is only a feeble chance of getting the coup though.
