Eranakulam (Kerala) to Delhi
Hi all,
I am looking to book a train ticket from Eranakulam to Delhi around 22nd December. So far I have narrowed it down to two trains: the Rajdhani Express and the Mangala Ldweep train. Which would you recommend? Is it true that the nicest part of the trip is the Konkan Railway section? The Mangala Ldweep train covers most of that territory at night, while the Rajdhani covers it fully during the day. What about the northern part of the trip, where the two take different paths? Which path looks more interesting from a scenery/life point of view? From a cursory glance, the Mangala Ldweep's path seems the more interesting, as it goes through places like Jhansi Jn, Gwalior, Agra Cantt, Mathura Jn. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, Ramesh |

Ramesh,
You are right.. Rajdhani covers the entire Konkan in the day time. Mangla reaches Ratnagiri in the morning. If you see the running time, Rajdhani takes only 42 hrs whereaas Mangla takes 50 hrs. There is nothing scenic in Mangla's route of Jhansi, Gwalior, Agra unless you are going to get down. I would suggest to book a ticket in Rajdhani.. |

Dear Ramesh
Agree with you & arunganpath. Only the Rajdhani gives you the mix of speed and scenery. However, being a fully a/c train, the Rajdhani comprimises on 'view' due to its tinted sealed glasses....But of course, you could drink in the view by standing at the door at regular intervals. |

Thanks so much arunganpath and c195ikon for the great answers. My trip has been delayed to January but I will definitely take the Rajdhani based on your suggestions.
I am disappointed to learn about the tinted, sealed glass on Rajdhani. Are the windows tinted in every class? Thanks for the suggestion about standing next to the compartment door - is it always open on AC compartments? |

Ramesh,
There will be two doors - one for entry into the compartment and the second to the berths. The second door will always be closed. You can keep the main entry door open and stand near it. |

Frequent visits to the open door are a must on these trips to drink in the view, though I did get grumbled at by one passenger Bangalore-Mysore who took severe exception to the door being opened.
