E-ticket questions
It's my first time trying to book an e-ticket on India Rail. I have a few questions.
1)When you sign up for an account, they "require" you to fill in you passport number. I think this is very high level personal information that isn't needed to have an account. Is it ok to use a dummy number? 2) When you choose your ticket, they ask for some sort of photo ID to verify the passenger with the e-ticket. Is a foreign driver's licence valid photo ID? According to their site a driver's licence is fine, but it doesn't specify whether it may be foreign or not. 3) Are e-tickets generally recognised now on most routes? Or will I still need to convince the ticket officer that my printed sheet of paper is really a valid ticket? Thanks for your help! |

No idea about the passport thing; never thought about it like that. I think there is a check digit built in, so you will have to try it and see if it is accepted. Can't see that they would ever check it with the passport.
I haven't travelled on an e-ticket. I would think your Canadian license would be fine. Or even your passport, which will probably be with you on the train. Have other e-ticket travellors been asked for ID? Haven't heard any problems with e-tickets posted here. the Indian railway system is very amazing: I'd be surprised to hear of a TTE who was not up to date on things (but I'm no train expert...)

1. Not sure whether they will enquire about your passport if the no. is specified. Though I dont see any problem specifying correct passport no.
2. Driver's License is just fine. It can be any other photo identity as well, if you have one. They require it to check that the person travelling is the same for whom the ticket has been booked. 3. e-tickets are recognised on most of the routes and ticket officers recognise it as a valid travel document. I have travelled on e-tickets and didn't find any problems. |

With an Indrail Pass, your passport number is entered on to it, and it can be asked for when showing your ticket. I guess if you have the wrong number, you might have problems with your ticket. You will find that your passport number is entered into 100s of hotel registers - I don't think you need worry about revealing it too much.

I also did not enter a passport number as there was no * mark next to it indicating it was an essential requirement.
Foreign licenses are fine. I was told I could use my International Driving Permit. |

Yes, I forgot that passport numbers are taken at hotels. I just don't like the idea of them kept online. Here in Canada, people are highly aware of identity theft issues and laws regarding personal information collection. So I avoid revealing anything unnecessarily.
I think I will go ahead and book online. Seems too easy to be true! Thanks for your responses. |

I had a couple of people travelled on E-Ticket very recently.
E-Tickets are absolutely fine. For Photo ID, sometime the Conductor ask for it and sometime dont. Any legal photo ID is acceptable. Photo ID such as driving licence is absolutely fine (even the international D/L). E-Tickets are generally available for all routes and sectors now. I even booked one for a Meter Gauge train! Hope this helps. Merc. |
