Dodging Quota through "Boarding Point"

This was discussed before, but my hunch is it doesn't work. Here's the story:

I tried to book the 4059 from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer (the train starts from Delhi). 2A was booked solid and 3A gave me an availability of 1 - I needed 2 seats. First I tried to book in 3A, thinking that the second person would get RAC - no such luck. The booking did not go through and the system gave availability problems as one of the possible reasons. After trying different credit cards etc. I decided to try the boarding point trick.

I booked from Delhi (!!) and got an availability of 43 in 3A. After changing the boarding point to Jodhpur the system duly warned me that it would use the boarding point quota, but still gave an availability of 43. But the booking did not go through. And it gave the same reasons as before.

So the question is: did anyone succeed to get a confirmed e-ticket on a waitlisted stretch by booking from an earlier station and changing the boarding point? Any strange looks from the TTE?

I can't help with your specific query, but I can tell you that there's no need to panic about not getting that train.

There is also a local train, 2JPJ, which leaves Jodhpur at 08:40 and arrives in Jaisalmer at about 16:00 (these were the times last time I looked). I've taken that train a couple of times and it's really friendly, not too busy and has windows that open. Just buy a ticket at Jodhpur the night before - I think it was Rs.150 or so - and enjoy the extra 2 hours in bed.

Thanks Mickey, I have now booked the night train, but your suggestion sounds like an alternative.

Still, the boarding point question really interests me for future problems...

You don't mention the date, so it's difficult to check.

RAIKA BAGH is 2kms from Jodhpur station but has a different quota, it's worth considering if you have to use train 4059.

I agree, I took the train in the other direction and really enjoyed the journey.

The train is now timed....Jodhpur 08:20, Jaisalmer 15:50 (there's about 40 minutes added to that journey time to help the train arrive 'on-time')

Steven, we want to travel on Dec 22nd and I tried booking 59 days before as I had forgotten that this train comes from Delhi and actually starts on the 21st. You can imagine my panic to find AC fully booked at this time! Amazingly enough I discovered that 3A offered available seats on the 4059 today which weren't there on tuesday morning... So I booked again and will cancel the night train.

Or maybe we will really take the 2JPJ - I'll have to confer with my travel partner.
