There are much fewer 2AC berths on a train.

Here's the number of berths for the overnight Mumbai-Goa train, and this has more 2A berths than most trains, and this train has a higher than average 4 x 3A carriages.

1A = 10
2A = 66
3A = 256
SL = 720

I fear that Steven's joke might be actually true. I recall reading in the papers about many Diwalli trains being booked up soon after becoming available.

Anyone wanting to travel at that period should check right now, and get their arrangements sorted, or be prepared to change them.

No, yes, yes & no really.

I refuse to torture you and attempt to drag info from you, ask yourself how you would attempt to answer your questions if you didn't know what was going through your mind.

You can depart Dharamsala (even Mcloud Ganj), get a taxi to kangra station, take a Kangra Valley train for one stop, get the next train back, and get back to Dharamsala in the same day.

I know that's not what you want to do, and I bet I could guess at exactly what you want to do.

Hello...

Thank you Steven. You know what.. I am confused, first time taking my parents and gf on holiday.

I am coming to Delhi next month, will reach Delhi on 4th Oct. and will leave for Assam on 13/14th Oct. My parents wants to see Durga Puja on 8th October in CR Park.

It shall be a great help if I can get two or more tour plans (possibly a Rough itinerary) from Delhi?

1. from Delhi on 6th October to 8th October back in Delhi by 6pm to see Durga Puja.

2. from Delhi 9th October to 12th October back in Delhi.

A. cheap budget accomodation outside Delhi B. advice in regards to better but cheaper transportation C. and please suggestions, you see I need to make an impression.

Are you asking if you can take a trip to Dharamsala in one of those gaps you have in Delhi?

Anyway, this thread is the wrong place to ask, there's a link in the 'Train Info' thread that may be useful (click on the link below).

Delhi/Amritsar to Pathankot and Kangra Valley Railway.

Other than that, I'm not the person to ask as I've not used the Kangra Valley Railway and I've not been to Dharamsala.

I've heard the Kangra Valley trains are slow and can be crowded, so be sure you know what your parents and GF would be comfortable with.

I must ask though, given the time constraints, why Dharamsala?

Agra (for Taj Mahal) and Fathepur Sikri would be great for the 6th till 8th.

And Haridwar & Rishikesh would be ideal for 9th till 12th.

But it really depends on what their interests are.

Shwmae hihowruin, croeso yn Indiamike.

I must confess to being terribly confused by your posts too.

You must be in Delhi for the Durga Puja, got that. The two time periods you have, as Steven said, aren't really enough to go far. I agree Haridwar/Rishikesh and Agra/Jaipur would be better than the long slog to Dharamsala.

There are some threads in the Delhi forum about day trips from Delhi, these might help with other ideas. If your mum is interested in religious things she might like Mathura and Vrindavan, south of Delhi, or Kurukshetra to the north.
Mosquitos suck.

Delhi - Agra - New Jalpaiguri

Dear,

I was wondering if it was possible to go from Agra directly to New Jalpaiguri. Are there 'Fast Trains' that take you faster to destination? How long would this journey take?

What about the most convenient way to travel from Kolkata to Delhi? I read about a train of 38 hours, but also about an alternative one of 17 hours.

Thanks a lot for your help !

Have a look at www.erail.in

Search for Agra to New Jalpaiguri, there's a fast (25 hours) train on Mondays and Wednesdays, there's 2 parts to that train, you'll find much more availability on 5631A.

The trains from Delhi will have more availability and better times.

Then search on erail for trains from Howrah to New Delhi, you'll see the Rajdhani trains are the real fast trains, but these trains are more expensive, although meals are included in the price.

Hi Steve, you very kindly answered some questions about train times etc earlier for me and now I have got to the stage where I will be booking the tickets online shortly. I have some questions about which berths to choose. We are travelling in February next year, taking the following trains on the following dates:

2965 AGC to JP on 05/02/09 - This will be our second train trip (the first being Delhi-Agra) and I am tempted to book 1AC for this. It will be dark when we are travelling anyway (even if the windows are clear enought to see out of) and I can't help thinking that a bit of seclusion would be good after the excesses of Agra. Am I overreacting? Should I just book 2AC, which is about half the price.

2465 JP to JU on 08/02/09 - 3AC on this one. Should we go for side berths or will we be disturbed by people walking up and down the aisles etc? If not side berths, does it matter whether I request upper or lower berths?

On our final journey we are travelling overnight from Jodhpur to Delhi and we can go 1AC, so I am hoping that they will allocate us the two berth compartment.

Thanks for your help...

These are the wrong questions to be asking me, Iím a complete commoner who doesn't feel overly comfortable in 2A, and has a particular dislike of 1A, but I'll gladly give my opinion.

Overreacting, yes, completely, after the crap you'll put up with in Agra, you need a dose of reality, and 1A definitely isn't the place to get that, book in 3A, 3A can have many families in the carriages, all very friendly and none of them wanting anything from you other than a smile and a simple chat, very refreshing after seemingly everyone thinking you're a walking ATM.

Book the train from Agra Fort (code AF), the train departs Agra Fort 40 minutes later than Agra Cant.

Again, this is a personal thing, I never really feel disturbed by people walking by, even in Sleeper Class.

If you want to be away from the corridor, book lower berth seats and book as early as you can to increase the chances of getting those lower berths.

If you have a special reason why you think you should have a 2-berth coupe, you can apply for one, if not, IR often try to put couples in the coupes, so keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks for the input, Steven.

I didn't mean to offend your sensibilities. This is our first trip to India, we're not what you'd call adventurous travellers normally and we have only a short time in India, so I figured I'd make the train travel as comfortable as possible. (Reading that back it sounds snarky, which it's not meant to).

I will go for the 3AC and book the lower berth seats - best of both worlds! I will also book from Agra Fort, I wondered about having the extra time to get on the train etc, but I am sure I have read something somewhere about it being further out of the city or something.

Thanks again.

You didn't, my time was very short and my mind wasn't on the job.

Agra Cant station is double as far from the Taj Mahal as Agra Fort station.
