The change from 90 days to 120 days for advance booking is not the only thing to have changed recently. Not sure if you booked through Cleartrip last time but if so are you aware of the need to have your account synched with irctc? This was brought in in February 2012 and has caught one or two people out.
The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.

Blog 2013 Indian Railways ARP changed to 60 days on 1st May 2013.

I'm pretty sure I booked directly with IRCTC. Can I still do it that way? Once I stopped American Express from freezing my credit card, I found it was quite easy.

Yes you should be OK. Amex is the only card that irctc accept from outside India. You might want to just check your account is ok before the critical dates arrive as irctc also added some additional security to their accounts last year. You could do this by booking a 2S seat from NDLS to GZB, costing about 50 rupees including fees.

There is a lot about getting irctc accounts working here.

Thanks Dave, I will do that to make sure everything is still OK. I have noticed that other people seem to have more trouble booking trains than I did the last time (December 2010). Except for Amex freezing my account, I found the process quite easy.

My 15 yr old daughter and I were on top bunks over 2 men we didn't know, my husband and son were on the side bunks, and our friends were also on side bunks further along the car. The men underneath us would not switch with our friends ( I guess the side berths are undesirable) so we spent a night feeling nervous about the whole situation. We thought by traveling 1A the 4 of us would get a lockable compartment that help us not worry so much about our kids. Or, perhaps someone here can explain to me where I went wrong booking those tickets so we didn't end up together. If I had realized before the journey that the tickets were not together, could I have done something about it? (On the first leg of the journey--Bangalore to Hospet--the 6 of us were together--2 upper bunks, 2 lower bunks, and 2 side bunks and we felt quite secure.)

you have my full sympathy in this regard. ir allocation sucks!!!
if you are OK with a party of 6 split across cabins/coupe then 1A should be fine. in that case book a tkt with you 4 (so you are almost assured a cabin) & another tkt for other 2 (so they may get a coupe or cabin shared with 2 strangers). problem with 1A is that you will not know if the allocation is messed up until charting. at least in 2A you know the situation at the time of booking & if you don't like it, you can try to book another ticket or cancel this one or look for an alternative.
usually people are reluctant to switch from inner berths to side berths, which makes me think railways should add a premium for specific berth positions to make it fair to all.
the biggest problem is that lower berth quota, tatkal quota, rac quota (in 2A) & HO quota mostly take up lower berths, so it becomes almost impossible to get a party of 4 with LB/UB/LB/UB together unless you are the first in line & there are enough berths to begin with...

If it's Dec2010 since you last used it I would definitely try the test purchase. You will be able to cancel it and get some of it refunded.

Hello All,

I am trying to figure out the best way to get from DEL to Ajmer.

I am considering an international flight that arrives in DEL at 20:15. There is a train that departs Delhi Cantt at 23:22. It is named the Hw Adi Mail (19106) and arrives in Ajmer at 6:40am.

Is this a standard passenger train? Does this seem to be a good option to get from Delhi to Ajmer?

Cheers,

David W.

IF your flight is ontime, perhaps you can make it just in time. But having to clear immigration and customs, and picking up your baggage may put paid to to your plans. Also you have to consider the bottleneck in traffic from the International Terminal to the Station, though it is "close" by. Please check it on Google Maps. I personally would not make it so close knowing my own experience. Good wishes.

A quick question, I have booked Rajdhani from New Delhi (dep 1645) to KGP for July 17th. I need to be in Kanpur on that day - can I board the train there (2200 hrs departure) instead - what is the procedure to do so. It is E-ticket.

Cheers

Nattu, I'm not sure if I get your question right, but no, a ticket is always valid for that specific train.

The way I see it, all you can do is get yourself a ticket for the other one, then cancel the first one. Cancellation costs are quite minimal shortly up until departure, then they go up a little really close to departure, then you can still get a refund of I think 50% some hours even after a train's departure.

Make sure first you find availability on your new train of choice, of course, before canceling the other one.

... ps, Wait, KGP is Kharagpur, right? You mean you want to board the train at a later station?

Erm, the question gets quite often discussed here. Search around for it, using keywords such as +"boarding train" +"later station" or somesuch. I think you need to work it out with the clerks at the railway station where you booked the ticket from. I'm not in on the ins & outs of it. If you do nothing, your seat will be given away on the assumption you are an absent passenger.

Visit NDLS PRS with the printout of your ticket (E-Ticket)/Original I/PRS Ticket, fill up the requisition form by putting in the necessary details (Keep the boarding point as CNB).
If the clerk insists on getting an authorized permission letter, get it signed from the Station Master/Divisional Railway Manager/Chief Reservation Supervisor (Carry one letter beforehand to avoid hassles)

Dipyaman & Machadinha

Thanks. This is an e-ticket bought through IRCTC website. I thought that the requisition could be handed over at any Computerised ticket counter in person, say, the one at IIT KGP (Kharagpur)?

I bought the NDLS-Kanpur Shatabdi ticket for the 13th and would like to board the Rajdhani at Kanpur on the 17th for which I have a confirmed NDLS-KGP ticket. Does not make sense for me to return to NDLS from Kanpur on 17th morning only to catch the Rajdhani at 1645 from the starting station, ie, NDLS.

Cheers
