quick info

I hope I'm posting this in the right thread

I'm just wondering if I'm understanding how to navigate the train system correctly up to this point.

If I would like to check schedules use erail.in?
If I would like to book tix from abroad (Cda) use cleartrip.com
I cannot use irctc because I do not have an Indian mobile #
As a useful resource for how it all works see seat61.com?

Am I missing anything?

Also on erail i noticed the train names are in different colours, is this a code for diff train types? Does anyone know what the diff colours mean?

Thank you for any info, looking forward to actually starting to book some passages but also nervous.

Can anyone tell me if these trains have pantry cars? If not I'll need to bring food with me.

12925 Paschim Express
14659 Delhi Jaisalmer Express

I found the India rail page that lists trains with pantry cars and could not find these two listed. I do not know how accurate that list is.

Not necessarily, although you might well want to; certainly those who are picky about train food. Carrying some snacks along is never a bad idea (nuts, cookies, peelable fruits and carry a pocket knife, Indian sweets, some or other bars not swift to melt, those wonderful bags of various Indian spicy crispy nibbles, and what have you. Bottle or two of water or some soft drinks, certainly. Although again all of it ought to be regularly provided, but then you just never know.)

I recently did a lengthy post on the ins & outs of it, see what you make of it, here (so post #16 there): how about food on trains. As the rest of that thread may of course be instructive.

Anyways, hopefully some others can tell you whether those trains in fact do have pantry cars

Ah; but that is the one and only train (and a very convenient overnight train, both ways) plying that full route, no?

While it's been ages since I took it (1993, to be precise), I can't imagine you'd be left stuck for food & beverages on it. So, yes, I'd expect food & drinks here from on-board vendors, at stations along the way, meals proper ordered from stations ahead, and such. Would others agree?

(Of course, the really middle-of-the-night hours you shouldn't expect too much to be going on, but then you shouldn't, anyway, pantry car or not. This train running from around 5 PM-11 AM both ways should allow plenty opportunity to fill your belly before and after those hours, though.)

I think you've got it pretty much covered there. Note Seat61 can never be expected to be entirely up-to-date, but its general outline is still very good and comprehensive, yes, and should be enough to get most people going. (Never to advertize btw, but I find Lonely Planet's how-to on the Indian Railways in just a few handy pages really quite excellent, and covering most all of the details that any average traveler might need in a clear and comprehensive fashion. So, yes, I mean in their India guidebook, not on the web or anything -- though individual chapters can be downloaded with them online, for a fee of course, it's not expensive btw I think. This would probably be in one of their "general" how-to chapters.)

Those Erail color codes I'm not sure what they mean, never pay them any attention. It looks like they're meant to line up certain train types yes; but then it doesn't seem consistent enough to add up. No idea.

What you should perhaps know is:

* Passenger trains are those that stop at each and every station along the route; you don't want these if you can avoid it. (You'll of course sometimes need them to get to those smaller stations; or they may be the only connection along minor routes.)

* Regular and somewhat faster trains (they at least don't stop quite everywhere) are usually referred to as either Express or Mail trains.

* Rajdhanis are "super-fast" trains (well, at least that's what they're designated as ), plying only between Delhi and other state capitals I think, and making very few stops along the way; so this alone makes them faster, plus they'll take precedence over other trains en-route. They're more expensive. (And I think or am quite sure A/C and so higher-class only. But you'll be paying extra, over those classes already being more expensive.) Meals here are I think included with your ticket price, and said to be pretty good, btw.

* A Shatabdi is I think similar (others please add or improve; I am in fact not that familiar with many of these train types), now connecting various metros with other important destinations. I think these run by day only (so count on only Chair Class, meaning seats only, no berths. That is of course fine if you're not doing an overnight trip. Both these train types ought to be fairly spiffy, or at least by Indian train standards.)

* Inbetween these you have the Garib Rath, also but not quite as fast, more expensive than regular trains, but less so than Rajdhanis or Shatabdis. A/C only again, I do believe. I hear their level of comfort may be somewhat lacking and for the price (sometimes Chair Class only or so, obviously not so great on longer or certainly overnight trips then. On regular trains, Chair Class whether itself in its higher- or lower-class varieties will seldom if ever be deployed overnight.) They were introduced in an attempt to offer a similar service to people who can't afford the other two.

* There exist other train types; somewhat newer are the Duronto's, running again I believe between metros and state capitals; these are supposed to make no stops along the way, save for maintenance breaks.

To add to the confusion and as usual, not every e.g. Express train needs to be designated as such, of course (or as far as I know or have seen); though I guess e.g. a Rajdhani will always be called so.

Thanks for your responses to my pantry car questions. Train station vendor food looks a little daunting and could prove to be another Indian adventure.

Mweh, to each their own, and arguably some seem to be iffy with it (more in the mind than anything else, I'd say and if I may say so), but me personally I'm just fine with it. Nor have ever noticed any adverse effects. (Can always be a matter of luck, of course, and I suppose. Though would have needed to have been quite a bit of luck then, over the years, and on many a train and bus ride there and eating street food and what have you. That doesn't mean I'll eat just "anything," btw. Good tip that came up again in recent conversation: If for some reason it doesn't feel right at that first bite, don't eat it, even if it looks and tastes and smells otherwise OK.)

But, to each their own, indeed. Like I explained on the other thread I linked to in post #1832 above, if you're uncomfortable with it, get yourself a parcel (so take-away meal) made with your favorite food at most any regular eatery kind of place. Restaurants at or around railway stations will probably do the same, so say if you allow yourself a half hour-hour extra or so before departure to arrange and collect it, it's a perfect solution, and is indeed what no few Indian passengers will do (though they may prefer their own home-cooked food, and nothing else! There are so-called "tiffin boxes" to carry this in and keep it warm for a while, but for the average foreign traveler I think these would get a little cumbersome.) Like I said there, you'll get it neatly wrapped up in foil and stuff, it should keep warm for a while.

So now carry some extra snacks and some water and stuff, and you're ready to go

(ps Someone mentioned here recently that having food in your pack on a train could be an issue, as itinerant mice may dig into there, destroying your pack in the process. Can't again say this has ever been an issue to me -- nor indeed ever noticed too many mice on board --, but I guess they have a point. I suppose I'll usually carry such snacks in my daypack, that I have on/next to me whilst sleeping and at all times anyway; or perhaps carry it in a plastic bag, hang it up by whatever hooks and stuff are provided. Leaving it inside your main pack and on the floor might arguably not be the best of ideas.)

Plus, btw, note where I said that where there is no pantry car, meals as such (so other than inbetween snacks, but breakfast, lunch, and dinner proper) will, perhaps not always but indeed very likely, be ordered from stations ahead. So it gets prepared there by either the Railway Catering (who also run the pantry cars), or by designated restaurants there. In other words, it's pretty much the same as having a pantry car on board. (To avoid all confusion btw, a pantry car is not a place where you sit down to have a meal, right. It's just where they prepare it, orders will be taken at your seat, and your meals delivered there later.)
