Thanks once again! The train hours are pretty good but I'll definitely check to see if there's a new air route opened by Deccan.I had looked at Jorhat about air travel for a back up because of the regions instability and Jet Airways fles J to G twice a week but on days that weren't any good to me.Indian Airlines has a flight but it's Jorhat to Calcutta to Guwahati which is much to circuitous.Once i get to Guwahati I'm planning on going to Shillong.

There used to be a helicopter service from Guwahati to Shillong, it was about US$30 one way, I don't know if it's still operational, I'd pay the price just to go up in the air in a helicopter, unless it looked like an Indian bus.

There is still that service.I'm considering it on the way back but there's a 10K baggage limit which if it's enforced mght be a problem. Also the Lonely Planet guide called their safety record dismal.None of the other guides seem to be of that opinion though.

need to buy short journey tickets in advance?
We are planning to go by train from Kozhikode to Kannur. Short journey, good train times in the afternoon/evening. Do we need to buy tickets in advance?
We are flying into Kozhikode, then the plan is to go straight to the train station. If we do buy the tickets in advance, what if we miss that train? Would we be able to use the tickets for the next train that comes along? Thanks for the advice!!! |

No info on me, so replying to remind myself to reply later.
I'm not great on South India, but I thought Kannur was up in the hills with no trains, I may be confusing it with somewhere else. For 'short' journeys, just turn up at the train station, but a 2nd class ticket and get on any train in the unreserved compartment, that's what I'd do, but not what I'd advise everyone to do. Flight arrival time? What train (number) were you thinking of booking? Are you happy in a crowded carriage? I could go on with many more questions.... |

Kannur (CAN for Cannanore) is up on the northern coast of Kerela, just 2 hours by train from Kozhikode (CLT for Calicut).
With the help of all of this great IM advice, I have managed to find train times, etc. Our flight is on 2/17 (soon!) scheduled to arrive at 3:30 pm (how likely is an Indian Airlines flight to be on time?). There are trains at 17:00, 17:25 and 19:05. The 17:25 train 2617 seems like the best bet. Or am I cutting things too fine. At first I was thinking we would just head for the train station and buy a ticket. We will have all our stuff with us... not to mention our kids!(11&12) Maybe not too crowded would be best. Does that mean we should reserve in advance? Thanks for the advice! |

After the thought about not wanting to be in too crowded a train car, I checked on availability only to see that there was almost nothing available in 2A! So I went ahead and booked - miracle - even printed out a ticket. Now fingers crossed that all goes as planned and we actually make the train! If we don't? I suppose the ticket is no good and you have to buy another?
Thanks again for this amazing thread which makes it possible to navigate this stuff! |

In Pokhara in Nepal at mo and the bus will arrive in Gorkaphur after 1pm so train ideally to be after then. Can you help please???!! Thanks - want to travel early next week 9/10/11 July. I'll have a look, but there are no direct trains, I'll look for another option.
An idea.... I know you can get a direct train to Agra, then from close to Agra you can get an overnight train to Udaipur. |

Train 9040 (Tu, Th, Su.) and train 9038 (M, W, F, Sa.)
depart Gorakhpur at 13:30 and get to Agra Fort at 04:45, then Fathepur Sikri at 05:46, then Sawai Madhoppur (for Ranthambhore) at 09:10, and Kota at 11:00 Kota is as close as it goes to Udaipur, Kota is about 30 kns from Bundi (I've heard Bundi is a great place). There are a couple of trains from Gorakhpur on Monday, one departs at 09:30 but only has sleeper class (not air con), it goes past Jaipur, Ajmer (for Pushkar), Falna (for Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh & a bus to Udaipur) and Abu Rd. (for Mt Abu) The other Monday train does the same route, but arrives late in the day at stations after Jaipur. Other than that, there are well timed overnight trains to Delhi from Gorakhpur. |
