Do I need to reserve for a short journey?

Hi

I have booked all train journeys for our three week trip through SD Enterprises and have Indrail passes for the three of us. However, one of the trains we are booked on leaves at 6.15 am and it is a one hour journey from Agra to Bharatpur. The lady at SD Enterprises suggested that we need not use this booking as it is a short journey. Does this mean that we do not have to reserve seats and can just turn up for a later train with our passes?

If you dont book, you need to buy a ticket from the counter and travel in general class. Chances are that the general class may be crowded and you may not get a place to sit. But, if you dont have heavy luggage, it is ok to travel by general compartment and enjoy the environment there.

You can also go by road as Agra-Bharatpur is only 50 Kms.

More info please.

The Indrail passes can be 12 hour (for a single journey) or up to 3 months for all journeys over a longer period.

Are you using single journey short term passes, or a longer term pass for all journeys?

As long as your pass is valid, it can be used on any train and for any class up to and including the class listed on your pass.

HOWEVER, the pass only pays for the fare and you still need a reservation.

I jumped on many short distance trains when I had my (3-month) Indrail pass, I had an Air Con pass, but just jumped into any class I felt like (usually Sleeper Class), then told the TTE that I was only traveling a short distance and didn't want a seat, it was always OK, but that doesn't mean to say that this will always be the case.

By the way, your train has a poor reputation for punctuality and can sometimes be 2 hours (or more) late.

Thanks Arunganpath and Steven for the advice. We have 3 week passes and will have suitcases so maybe we should change the reservation with SD Enterprises for a later train? My thirteen year old daughter will whinge for the whole journey if we have to stand all the way!
Thanks for the info about punctuality but having travelled by train in India in the past we are resigned to late trains!
