hi, does anyone know the easiest/fastest way from Dharamsala to Rishikesh (Hardwar)? I know there is a local direct bus, but was wondering if there are any other options like train or tourist bus. Thanks!

If you have the time, then you can do Dharamsala-Shimla and Shimla-Haridwar-Rishikesh by bus. These routes will take you through many picturusque places.

The other option is Dharamsala-Pathankot by road; and Pathankot(Chakki Bank)-Rishikesh by a direct train. You may also do the Dharamsala-Pathankot stretch by road/toy train combination.

Thanks Shimla! That was helpful. I think I will stay with the direct local bus, since I'm really short in time - going only for 2.5 weeks...

Its unfortunate that you have so little time ! A single bus journey from Dharamsala to Rishikesh takes 14.5 hrs, which is a pretty long time to spend in an ordinary bus.

If you do Dharamsala-Chakki Bank(taxi) and Chakki Bank-Rishikesh(direct train), the total journey will take 15.5 hrs., but a major part of it will be by train, so you'll be more comfortable.

it's true, but I saw online that the only train to Rishikesh leaves Chakki Bank around 1am, which makes me think it's not the best idea for a woman traveling alone... unless I'll find travel partners by then in Dharamsala... Am I being paranoid?

Now you mention that you're travelling alone !

In that case 1.00 a.m. is certainly an odd hour. If you do find travel partners at D'sala, you can share a cab late evening and have it drop you off at Chakki Bank station an hour before the departure time.

If you're alone, then the direct bus with all its discomforts seems a better option.

I'm thinking of doing this. Though, the first thoughts that come into my mind are very high mountains and windey roads.... is it safe and possible to do this journey in mid November, early December?
